Therefore, no matter where the nature of good or non-good arises, it does not become the gateway for the growth of habitual tendencies. When it is not disturbed by conditions and abides in its own nature, then the objects are said to be clear. At that time, the arising of good or non-good becomes the gateway for karmic habitual tendencies, while the indeterminate establishes the habitual tendencies of manifestation. Among the consciousnesses of the senses, whatever is said to be the consciousness of the mind abiding in its own nature, and whatever arises simultaneously with a single object, these are called having clear objects and aspects. The arising of these good or non-good becomes the gateway for karmic habitual tendencies, and even that which becomes indeterminate becomes the gateway for habitual tendencies of similar flow. The unclear consciousness of the mind that is disturbed by conditions, and that arises simultaneously with a single object, and the consciousnesses of the senses in situations where the mind abides in its own nature but the mind is distracted by other objects, are called unclear objects and aspects. These, whether arising in good, non-good, or indeterminate, do not become the gateway for the growth of habitual tendencies. The nature of whatever can become the gateway for the growth of habitual tendencies is such. What is the basis upon which influence should be exerted? That is only what belongs to the continuum of sentient beings, and not external objects, because those are not related to the exertor of influence. If habitual tendencies are imprinted where they are imprinted, the result will also ripen there. It is not reasonable for the result of karma to ripen on external elements, as the sutra says: The ripening of actions done and accumulated is not on the external element of earth, but ripens on the aggregates, elements, and sense sources that are taken up. Therefore, even among what belongs to the continuum of sentient beings, the eyes and so forth are not suitable as a basis for the growth of habitual tendencies, because they are not constantly present in all lives as they revolve in samsara, because they cease when one is born in the formless realms. Continuums that are interrupted and things that are impermanent are also not suitable as a basis for the growth of karmic habitual tendencies, for example, where the basis for imprinting is interrupted,

The habitual imprints of the earth will also disappear. If that were the case, since there would be no cause, the ripening of the fruits of karma would also be wasted. That is also unreasonable. As it is said in the sutra: "The actions of sentient beings, even after hundreds of kalpas, will not be wasted. When they gather and the time arrives, they will ripen into fruit." Therefore. There is also reason for this. Externally, things like sesame seeds continue in a continuous stream, and it is seen that they are imbued with the fragrance of flowers, etc. Things that lack continuity like sound, or things that are very unstable like the wind, are not seen to be imbued with the fragrance of flowers. Therefore, the basis for imbuing habitual imprints must be something that continues in a continuous stream throughout all the lives of samsara. Such a thing that continues in a continuous stream must have a nature that does not distinguish between objects and appearances, and is not clear. Because of this, the function of any of the imbuing factors, whether virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral, can enter, because its own nature is very weak. Things that have distinct and clear objects and appearances are not suitable for imbuing habitual imprints, because their own nature is strong and there is no opportunity for other functions to enter. Externally, things like musk and garlic, which have very strong odors, do not absorb the odors of other substances like flowers, while things like sesame seeds, which have similar and weak odors, are seen to absorb the fragrance of flowers. Therefore, the objects and appearances of the seven consciousnesses, which are distinct and clear, cannot function as the basis for imbuing. Although it continues in a continuous stream and does not distinguish between objects and appearances, things that are permanent like the "self" of the Samkhya school cannot be changed by conditions, and those that cannot be changed by conditions cannot be entered by the function of imbuing, so they are not the basis for imbuing. Otherwise, it must be something that can produce the distinctions of imbuing and can be entered by function. Moreover, it must be something that is related to the imbuing factors in the same entity and at the same time. Things that belong to other streams, or that occur before or after the imbuing factors, are not suitable as the basis for imbuing because they are not related to the imbuing factors. Thus, birth

It can make everything continue uninterruptedly at all times and places, and because the objects and appearances are not obvious, not clear, and impermanent, it can accommodate the function of being the door of action, and has the nature of being one with the door of action and the continuum, and being related at the same time. Only the Alaya consciousness possesses these qualities. Therefore, the Alaya consciousness is the basis of the door of habituation. This view is established. These reasons are also as stated in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle: "Stable, unindicated is the door of birth, from the function and association of the door of birth, the door of action is not other than it, this is the nature of habituation." This is what is to be explained. Among them, regarding the explanation of "unindicated," some commentators explain it as unindicated as neither virtuous nor non-virtuous. I do not think this explanation is reasonable. If this is the explanation, then the afflicted mind should also become the basis of the door of habituation, because it meets the meaning of the verse "stable, unindicated." If someone says that this is because the continuity of the Dharma, such as the manifestation of the worldly and transmundane paths, is cut off. It cannot be said that it is unstable for this reason alone, because as it is said, among the mind and mental factors, some are stable. Therefore, I think the meaning of unindicated, as I said, refers to the meaning of objects and appearances that are not obvious and not clear, which is reasonable. If someone asks, the nature mentioned above is also possessed by the mental factors of the retinue of the Alaya consciousness, so it should also become the basis of the door of habituation, is that so? No. Because mental factors arise momentarily relying on the mind, therefore, the continuity of the latter arising from the former of the same kind does not exist, so it is unstable. Or, whatever is suitable as a basis is the basis of the door of action, otherwise, it cannot even be used as the basis of habituation. Mental factors only rely on others, and do not have the power to exist independently without relying on others. Therefore, it cannot be used as the basis of the door of habituation. Some people think that only the six consciousnesses are the basis of the door of action. In order to specifically refute these views of their own school, the Compendium of the Great Vehicle says: "The six are not related, contradict the three differences, in kind"
