Both states of complete purity are the same in that they are true and possess the nature of luminosity. Similarly, when this mind is accompanied by afflictions such as desire, it does not abandon its own nature and transform into the essence of those afflictions. However, its own nature is suppressed by the afflictions and becomes obscured, while the nature of afflictions such as desire becomes very clear, like the impurities in gold. At that time, the mind is referred to as being afflicted, impure, and so on. When, through the path, afflictions and discriminations are well purified like the impurities in gold, and the mind's own nature, being completely pure and merely luminous, becomes manifest, then the mind is given names such as mirror-like wisdom, but there is no difference whatsoever from its previous nature. Furthermore, what is the meaning of knowing something as pure and luminous? It means that its own essence does not arise as the nature of impurity, just as water is naturally pure. The mind also arises as the nature of self-existing purity, but it becomes impure due to the power of conditions. If there are no conditions, it is called luminous because it clearly manifests its own state, like the light of a lamp. Sentient beings' minds, due to the condition of improper attention, mistakenly grasp at notions of cleanliness, happiness, permanence, self, and so on, which are inverted views. If they are separated from that condition, then their own state, the non-dual suchness, will be clearly revealed by itself. Therefore, the mind is said to be naturally pure and luminous. Thus, if one understands the meaning of the mind being naturally luminous and pure, one can easily understand the meaning of the definitive sutras and their profound instructions. Like, "The water element, gold, and space, are desired to be pure as purity," and so forth, one will also correctly understand the meaning of the texts that show the transformed state. The manner of the arising and ceasing of the alaya-consciousness has been explained. Now, let us analyze this: whoever possesses the alaya-consciousness also possesses the arising consciousness,
