It appears as "consciousness." This name also indicates it. Because the entering consciousnesses that arise from this occur according to their conditions, it is fitting as the root consciousness, like the roots of trees. In the scriptures of the Satonpa school, it also says, "As long as samsara exists, the aggregates exist." This name also indicates it. Although sometimes form and mind appear to be interrupted, the continuity of the alaya-consciousness is not interrupted, so it is fitting as the aggregates as long as samsara exists. In the scriptures of the venerable ones, it also says: The limb of existence is view, consciousness and creation, movement and realization, the seventh is that which causes entry. Among these, the limb of existence cannot be other than the alaya, because others besides it cannot perform actions such as taking a body. The places of view, etc., should be combined appropriately with the six entering consciousnesses. It is known in both the Greater and Lesser Vehicles as the alaya, because it is the basis of all samsara and nirvana. Regarding the establishment of its own characteristics, there are two types: direct and indirect. The first is, in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, it says: "How should one view the establishment of its characteristics? In short, there are three types: the establishment of its own characteristics, the establishment as the nature of cause, and the establishment as the nature of result. Among these, the own characteristic of the alaya-consciousness is that which possesses the ability to completely hold the seeds, relying on the habitual tendencies of all defiled dharmas, and therefore it is the nature of the cause of their arising. Among these, the characteristic of the nature of cause is that the alaya-consciousness, as the possessor of all seeds, always takes as the nature of the cause of all defiled dharmas. Among these, the establishment as the nature of result is that the alaya-consciousness arises relying on the habitual tendencies of all defiled dharmas from beginningless time." Among these, the first is the establishment of the general nature of the alaya without distinguishing between the two parts of seed and maturation. The second is the characteristic of the seed part. The third is the establishment of the characteristic of the maturation part. Among these, the alaya-

What is the cause of this consciousness, and what is its nature? What are its objects and aspects? The ālaya has two aspects: the nature of fruition and the nature of seeds. The cause of the ālaya of the nature of fruition is the habituation of all pervasively defiled dharmas. These habituations are of three types: habituation of manifestation, habituation of the limb of existence, and habituation of the view of self. Among these, the first habituation is the causal condition of this, because it is the cause of the manifestation of the nature of the ālaya-consciousness. The second is the dominant condition, because it is the cause of the ālaya transforming into a good or bad rebirth. The third is also the dominant condition, because it is the cause of distinguishing self from others. The cause of the ālaya of the nature of seeds is the virtuous and defiled dharmas of pervasively defiled dharmas, as well as the obscured and unspecified dharmas, because the nature of fruition and these arise from the simultaneous arising and ceasing in one continuum. Therefore, in the Compendium of Vehicles, it is also said: Just as the ālaya-consciousness is the cause of all pervasively defiled dharmas, so too all pervasively defiled dharmas are established as the causal condition of the ālaya-consciousness, because no other causal condition is seen. Thus it is said. Among these, the nature of the ālaya of the nature of fruition is the nature of consciousness, so it possesses objects and aspects, performs the function of taking and abiding in a body, becomes the support for the door of habituation of all pervasively defiled dharmas, is not similar to other dharmas arising from virtuous or defiled minds, so it is obscured and unspecified, has extremely unclear objects and aspects, so it is only neutral feeling. It is the dominant condition of the present pervasively defiled dharmas, and pervades all bodies. The ālaya of the nature of seeds abides only in the nature of potential, and is not established as a substance of consciousness, so it has no objects and aspects, and from the aspect of fruition, it is not to be said that the substance is the same or different, all
