When reciting haphazardly, one obtains the designation "so-and-so's treatise is being recited." Similarly, when ordinary people read the scriptures, reading the order of the letters in that way is no different from the order of the letters spoken by the Buddha in the past, so one obtains the designation "reading the Buddha's teachings." The order of the letters was arranged by the Buddha, so it also obtains the designation "Buddha's teachings." Thus, the actual content of the treatise that clarifies the meaning of what a person should adopt or reject is the words and sentences that are related to the listener's mind, and the basis for establishing these words and sentences is the collection of letters arranged by the author of the treatise, which has a special order. This is called the correct establishment of the nature of the treatise, without any faults. Ordinary person: established on the continuum of sentient beings who have not attained the undefiled path of the Dharma of the Noble Ones. Entering: not established on a single moment or a broken continuum, but established on the continuous entering of cause and effect without interruption, even for a moment. Separate determination: refers to the cause of ripening desirable things being good conduct, and the cause of undesirable things being misconduct, etc., established on the separate distinction between cause and effect. Conformity: such as generosity leading to perfect enjoyment, established on the arising of the effect in accordance with the cause. Rapid: established on the rapid arising of cause and effect without interruption. Order: not established on the simultaneous arising of cause and effect, but established on the arising one after another. Time: when cause and effect continuously arise, what has arisen and ceased is called the past; what has a cause but has not arisen is called the future; and what has arisen but has not ceased is called the present. Place: in all ten directions, such as the east, established on the existence of material cause and effect. It is not so for immaterial things, because they cannot pervade the directions. Number: established on each different conditioned phenomenon, because on one different nature, numbers such as two are unreasonable. Collection

Therefore, that which gathers the conditions of cause and effect and lacks nothing is designated as "collection." Thus, these non-sentient formations should be understood as being nominally existent, designated by phenomena with temporary distinctions. The aggregate of formations has been explained. Next, intending to determine the aggregate of consciousness, it is said, "What is the establishment of the aggregate of consciousness?" Among these, there are two: a brief indication of the names and a detailed explanation of their meaning. First, to show the names, it is said, "Whatever is mind and intellect is also consciousness." Thus, consciousness is called 'consciousness' because it distinguishes individual objects; it is called 'mind' because of its diversity; and it is also called 'intellect' because it is the basis of the immediately preceding mind. This is in terms of not establishing the ālaya and the afflicted mind, considering the types of the six entering consciousnesses, and therefore it is said to be the names of those, but in reality, those are not mind and intellect, because they do not have the meaning of those words. For example, 'mind' is named by the meaning of diversity or accumulation, and 'intellect' is named because it constantly thinks with self-conceit. However, the entering consciousnesses, in each moment, focus on one definite object of individual objects, so they are not called diverse; the five sense consciousnesses do not have the thought of self, and the mental consciousness does not always grasp self, so they are not called intellect either. Therefore, in reality, mind is the ālaya-consciousness itself, because it is the basis for the habits of all formations, so it is the nature of diversity or accumulation. Intellect is only the afflicted intellect, because it is the nature of constantly thinking with self-conceit. Explaining those names in detail, first explaining mind, what is called mind should be understood as the ālaya-consciousness itself, which is the basis of all seeds. The reason for this is that it is the nature of accumulating the habits of those phenomena with defilements. The reason for this is also that the ālaya itself is the aggregates, elements, sources, good and non-good.
