Now, what makes things clear are the two collections of words. And what serves as the basis for them is the collection of letters, because names and words are closely connected relying on letters. But letters are not the real clarifiers, because letters themselves do not express meaning. This has been established through scripture and reasoning. Here, when the author's intention, and the effort of the tongue, palate, etc., cause the collection of letters to arise in accordance with the speaker's order of motivation, the listener hears these letters in the order of hearing, thereby attaching names and words to the essence and characteristics of the things they wish to express, making them clear. Similarly, through the collection of names and words thus attached, the listeners are able to understand the meanings that the author wishes to express, just as they are. Therefore, the collection of names and words, which has the characteristic of universal sound, appearing in the minds of the listeners, is the real treatise. The names and words that appear in the author's intention are the cause of the treatise, but not the real treatise, because they do not clarify the meaning of the treatise to others. Because they are related to the wisdom of the explainer, they do not appear in the cognition of others. And for oneself, there is no need to clarify, because these meanings have already been understood, so there is no point. The collection of letters is also not the real treatise, because they do not show the meaning of entering and exiting, as mentioned before. If so, how are the names and words related to the listener's wisdom produced by the author? Because the collection of letters created by the author is heard by the listener through the power of hearing, the listener's universal sound also arises because of this, so it can be said that these are also done by the author. For example, when suffering arises from the power of being struck by another, we say that this suffering was done by another. If so, then only the names and words related to the listener's continuum, heard by the author himself, are the treatise, and the names and words heard from the lineage of the explainer are not the treatise, because these are the collection of letters of the treatise author through the power of hearing.

Because it is not produced by karma. If that is the case, then the treatise would only be meaningful for the author's own direct disciples, and not for later disciples. Then, would it be meaningless for the Tathagata to compile the scriptures, compose treatises, write them in books, and so on? No, there is no such fault, because like this: the collection of letters that the second speaker uses to explain the treatise is not made by the second speaker. Then what is it? It is made by the first speaker, the author of the treatise himself. Because from there, the collection of letters is as it is, and having heard it in that way, from the subsequent recollection, the second speaker is able to explain the collection of letters without disturbing the order. Otherwise, the collection of letters cannot be explained in the order in which the treatise maker arranged it. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Through propagation, other treatises, apart from oral instructions, who has seen anyone reciting?" Therefore, the composers of treatises newly combine the differences in the order of letters, but they do not newly create the essence of letters, because letters have existed from beginningless time before the treatise composer. Moreover, it is not the case that the material essence of letters has existed unchanging from the beginning, because then the effort of the tongue and lips, etc., would become meaningless. It is also not the case that only the genus does not exist from the beginning, because if letters had a creator, then before that letters would not exist, and then the expression of words would be interrupted. Therefore, because the expression of words is beginningless, letters are also beginningless. This is also the root of the error of those non-Buddhists who believe that sound was not created by Brahma and is permanent. Because the treatise makers newly combine the order of letters, therefore, reciting the letters without disturbing the order in which the author combined them depends on the author himself. When other people also follow the order in which the author combined the letters
