The statement "It is of its own nature, but not truly established" is valid. Thus, each individual letter cannot serve as the basis for the imputation of nouns and sentences, and therefore, conceptualization does not cling to it as a means of expressing meaning. Therefore, letters become meaningless. This shows that letters do not convey meaning. When many letters are heard in an auditory related manner, conceptualization imputes them as revealing the essence and characteristics of meaning. Therefore, speech is not distinct from letters, because they are indistinguishable. This means that there is no speech that expresses meaning apart from letters. Thus, letters are properties of meaning, they arise sequentially from their cause, a series of motivations, and they are apprehended by their respective objects in the same order in which they arise. However, nouns and sentences do not exist in meaning, so there is no sequence of arising from causes and conditions. However, since they are manifestations of mind, conceptualization apprehends them as a single entity at once. If names and words do not arise from causes and conditions, how can the statement "names arise from letters, and words arise from names" be valid? Its meaning is as follows: When some characteristics of letters are heard in a related manner, people impute them as names that reveal the essence of meaning. Therefore, it can be said that names arise from the combination of letters. When many such letter characteristics that can be imputed as revealing the essence are heard in a related manner, they are imputed as words that reveal the characteristics of meaning. Therefore, it is said that words arise from the combination of names. Thus, the establishment of the three aggregates from the perspective of reasoning is like this. Now, the way in which the three aggregates are established from the perspective of the Abhidharma will be shown. Among them, the Vaibhashika Abhidharmikas believe that these three aggregates, such as letters, are not substantially different from form, mind, and mental factors, but are non-associated compositional factors. Among them, a letter is: when the sound of saying "A" is heard by hearing, the thought arises that "A has appeared." When such a thought becomes an object to be grasped, it is neither consciousness nor external
