Therefore, for external and internal phenomena, the words that clearly show the self-nature without involving the differences of the Dharma, such as "eye, nose, form," etc., are called "collections of names." The collection of words is the self-nature of all phenomena, such as permanence and impermanence, happiness and unhappiness, etc., which clearly show the words related to the differences of the Dharma. For example, "all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, all phenomena are without self," etc., are called "collections of words." The collection of letters is the place from which both name and word arise, such as the letters that reveal 'ka' and so on, and the vowel letters such as 'a', 'i', etc., are called "collections of letters." There are three defining terms here, namely nature, function, necessity, and the corresponding defining term. First, it is called a letter because it clarifies both name and word. Why does it clarify them? Because when letters are assembled, they clarify the self-nature and differences of phenomena, so these expressions are designated as names and words. Second, the speaker is also the letter, because it truly speaks the meaning of self-nature and difference, that is, the name and word that clarify the self-nature and difference of phenomena, which is when many letters are assembled. Third, these letters, which are the collection of vowels and consonants, if the tone of their respective expressions is not understood, because they belong to the category of names, they can prevent being understood as something else. Thus, why is the letter 'a' 'a'? Apart from just the tone of the sound of saying 'a', there is no other name for the letter 'a' that can be understood. If one says "the first of the vowels," will it be understood? It is not so, because that only understands the order of speaking, and does not understand the tone of the sound of 'a', and the letter also depends on the situation of the tone. Everything is just self-nature and difference, and the two are just names. All of them are subsequently named by these three, therefore, the collections of names, words, and letters are established as such.

What is it? These collections of names, etc., are difficult to understand, so let's analyze them a little. In this regard, one must understand the two different views of the treatises on reasoning and the treatises on Abhisamaya, namely, the Lord of Knowledge (Vidyāpati) considers the collection of letters to be the nature of sound's own characteristic. The collection of names and sentences, both of which are the general characteristics of sounds analyzed by conceptualization, are not established as real in either inner consciousness or outer objects, so they are not real. Therefore, they are considered not to be included in any of the five aggregates such as form. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: 'Letters arise from intentional consciousness; when they arise, the sound of consciousness arises. Its special feature is that it can be determined by the ear. It has the consciousness produced by consciousness; hearing it, hearing quickly or not quickly.' And so on, and 'Letters are also heard simultaneously.' And 'It does not hold long, etc.' And so on, because letters are shown as the object of hearing. Again, in the same treatise, it is said: 'Words, etc., are all conceptual constructs without reality; how can the connection between real things and it occur?' And so on, because both names and sentences are shown as superimpositions. In this regard, a letter is born from the same place, effort, and intention, and has the nature of many moments of hostile sounds. Even a short letter needs to be completed in the time it takes for a person to open or close their eyes, and many moments have already passed at that time. As it is said: 'The nature of letters, all limits, also exists in the blink of an eye. It is also gradually completed by the combination of many atoms.' As it is said. Therefore, even a short letter is gradually grasped by hearing, but not simultaneously. As it is said: 'Consciousness is also because of that moment, letters are gradually understood.' As it is said. If that is the case, each moment of a letter is not a letter, and it is impossible for those many previous and subsequent moments to gather together at the same time. Therefore, some say that letters are merely imputed and not real. What? Where is it understood that each moment of a letter is not a letter? Isn't it said that a short letter is completed in the time it takes to blink an eye?
