That which is neither the ground nor of a fabricated nature is considered to be the letter called "A." Similarly, other vowel and consonant letters are also considered to be the same. When some characteristics of letters with the aforementioned qualities come together, concepts of names such as "eye-consciousness" arise, which only clearly express the essence of things. And that which is grasped by that concept, which is neither externally nor internally established, but exists as a substance, is called a collection of names. A sentence is when various characteristics of the aforementioned names come together, a concept of words arises, which clearly expresses the characteristics of things such as permanence and impermanence. And that which is grasped by that concept, which exists as a substance and is not established as external or internal, is called a collection of sentences. Thus, letters arise from spoken sounds, names arise from letters, and sentences arise from names; this is a sequential process. Those Abhidharma scholars who follow the sutras of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles consider these three collections to be non-associated compositional factors that are not of the nature of form, mind, or mental factors. However, according to the Vaibhashikas, they do not consider them to exist as substances. Nor do they, like logicians, consider sound to be self-characterized or fabricated, lacking a truly existent nature. So what is it then? It is that which is temporarily designated by the expressive function of speech, which is truly established on the basis of designation, neither established as itself nor as other, and which, in conventional terms, can be apprehended by the mind with different characteristics from the basis of designation. Among these, a letter is when the tones of the sound called "A" are heard in the order of auditory perception, the thought "This is A" subsequently arises. And that which is grasped by the thought "This is the letter A" is not the tones of the sound heard by auditory perception, because those tones have ceased when that thought arises. Nor is it the thought itself, because it is contradictory for something to act upon itself. Nor is it some other phenomenon that exists as a substance, because no fruit or essence of such a thing has been observed by valid cognition. Therefore, that which is grasped by the thought "This is the letter A" does not exist as a substance, but after that thought

Therefore, following this, in order to accord with the term "A" in the world, it is not merely an examination. Therefore, regarding the sound of "A," through conceptualization, one thinks, "This is the letter A!" Because of this clinging, the basis of imputation here is the sound itself. Just as the nature of "A" is, so too should other vowels and consonants be understood. The collections of names and words are accepted in the same way as the logicians of the past established them. The logicians believe that if something is not real, it cannot be a conditioned phenomenon or an object. Therefore, names and words are of a fabricated nature. They cannot be conditioned phenomena or objects, and therefore they are not considered to be aggregates of formation. However, the Abhidharma masters believe that although these exist by imputation, there is no contradiction in establishing them as aggregates of formation because they are imputed to conditioned phenomena. This is just a subtle difference. Furthermore, in the Compendium of Ascertainments, regarding the objects of knowledge to be expressed, the most concise is the letter, the intermediate is the name, and the most extensive is the word. Relying on the letter alone, one can only distinguish the sound, but one cannot distinguish any meaning. Relying on the name, one can distinguish the essence of each phenomenon and also distinguish the sound, but one cannot distinguish the detailed differences of many phenomena. Relying on the collection of words, one should be able to distinguish everything, and one should also understand this principle. Therefore, in this treatise, the way in which the aggregates are established as having or not having the three collections is as follows. By relying on the establishment of these three collections, one can easily understand the nature of the treatise. This is because the treatise explains the meaning of what to adopt and abandon in the temporary and ultimate senses, and this is established by relying on the three collections with the characteristics mentioned above. Furthermore, by relying slightly on the previous reasoning, that which clearly elucidates the meaning of what a person should adopt and abandon is a treatise. There are two aspects to this: the nature of what elucidates and that which serves as its basis. First, that which only elucidates the essence of things is the collection of names,
