It is the main cause of creating karma. Other afflictions such as hatred, even without being the cause, can still create any karma. Without desire as the cause, it is impossible to create any karma. Therefore, in relation to other afflictions, desire is the common cause of all karmas, so it is the most important among these afflictions. Therefore, it is said that desire is also the main thing when karma is first created. Why is desire the main thing when taking rebirth? Because of clinging to the places of rebirth such as the womb, and by the power of the desire to obtain them, one connects with that place of rebirth. For example, some people do not have the desire to obtain food, clothing, and other utensils, and they do not take them at will. Moreover, sentient beings are not led to the womb and so on involuntarily by Ishvara and others, but they can take the places of rebirth such as the womb voluntarily, which can be established by reasoning. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Because of attachment to oneself, sentient beings are not led by others, because of the desire to abandon suffering and obtain happiness, they go to inferior places of birth." This is what is said. Furthermore, anyone who has desire for desire at the time of death will definitely connect with the desire realm, but it is not certain whether there is ignorance and karma of the desire realm. For example, for a non-returner (anāgāmin) who has a body of the desire realm, even if he has the ignorance and karma of that realm, he will not be born in the desire realm. It is not that the non-returner does not have the ignorance of the desire realm, because it is said in the Thirty Verses: "In whatever place he is born." This shows that the mind and its associated mental factors in his continuum are those of the desire realm. It is also not that he does not have the karma of the desire realm, even if he does not have the karma of experiencing the results of actions and experiencing the results of actions many times after being born in the desire realm, but he still has many karmas of experiencing the results of actions on the path of seeing and not definitely experiencing the results of actions. Similarly, at the time of death, if one has manifest desire for existence with the higher realms as the object, then one will connect with those higher realms, but it is not certain whether there is ignorance and karma of those higher realms. For example, the later child of the two higher realms will definitely be born in the desire realm, and the non-returners who have bodies of those higher realms, and so on. In addition,

Just as from a single thread of weaving material, various kinds of woolen cloth arise due to differences in type, similarly, even a single action, due to different places of birth and the craving for different future aggregates, nourished by various cravings, gives rise to various different ripened births. For example, the intermediate state of being born as a mule is due to attachment to the birthplace of a donkey, and thus it connects there. Therefore, it is said that craving is the main thing for taking birth. Similarly, the reason why craving is the main thing will be explained in detail in this text. Enough of elaboration. Second, to show that the realms and sources are similar to this, the question is: Why? The answer is, for that question, the answer should be explained as showing the aggregates as having clinging. Like this, because it has clinging, it is called the realms and sources of clinging. And so on. The way of having and the nature of clinging are as previously explained. When the nature of the three dharmas with clinging is actually revealed, then the opposite of that, the three dharmas without clinging, will be easily understood. Therefore, no effort was made to write treatises explaining these. Therefore, in this text, three divisions are shown for the aggregates, realms, and sources, and like this, with "thus" and so on, the divisions of their nature are shown in order to easily understand the nature of each of the three dharmas. With "clinging," it is shown that after understanding the nature of each of the three dharmas, in order to properly accept and reject them, the division of the two aspects of defilement and purification is shown. The three dharmas with clinging encompass all aspects of defilement to be abandoned, while the other encompasses all aspects of purification to be adopted. With "division," it is shown that a vast array of divisions is shown for the sake of generating wisdom. Fourth, the characteristics of each of the three dharmas, divided into three, first the characteristics of the aggregates, divided into five, first the characteristics of the form aggregate, the question is: Previously, only the name of the form aggregate was mentioned, but its nature is not known, so what is the characteristic of the form aggregate? This is the question.
