Therefore, the various forms of consciousness abide in their respective faculties and arise dependent on the object. Third, in showing the three dharmas as having clinging, there are two parts. First, regarding the question of establishing the aggregates as aggregates of clinging: The sutra says, "Monks, the aggregates and the aggregates of clinging should be explained." So why are they called aggregates of clinging? The answer is: Because they possess the clinging that will be explained below, therefore, the contaminated form, etc., are called aggregates of clinging, just as a cart with an ox is called an ox cart. The way of possessing is to be related to the six doors, such as the nature of clinging and arising from the cause of clinging. Just as saying that arising from the cause of contamination, etc., is called contaminated and bound. Some people think that the spiritual friend is also connected with the object of clinging and the corresponding, so explaining it as the meaning of possessing is not reasonable. If so, then anything that is connected with the object of contamination and the corresponding should be considered contaminated and bound. Clinging is considered by the Vaibhashikas, etc., to be the general afflictions. The so-called aggregates of clinging, like saying the fire of grass and straw, the internal aggregates arise from clinging; and like saying the king's man, the external vessels depend on clinging. Or, both are like saying the tree of flowers and fruits, because they can produce clinging, they are called aggregates of clinging. Although they think so, this treatise considers that the desire to obtain and the attachment to not separate are called clinging. Why are these two called clinging? Because the meaning of clinging is to strongly desire and accept the aggregates of suffering, and this exists in both desire and attachment. For example, through generating the desire to obtain the aggregates of the future life, it is realized; through generating strong attachment to the aggregates of the present life, it is not completely abandoned. If it is said, is there not also attachment to the past aggregates? Why is there only attachment to the future and present aggregates?

If asked: Then what is it that takes hold? Answer: Whatever craving that looks forward, it is merely attachment to the past aggregates, but it is not taking hold, because the past is ceased, so no one can accept it, and no one strives to obtain it. But the future aggregates and the present aggregates are not like that, because everyone aims at the happiness of the aggregates in this life and the next, engaging in acceptance and rejection. Therefore, attachment to the present and future aggregates takes hold of the aggregates of suffering, but not craving for the past does not. If you say, isn't it also said that other afflictions such as ignorance and meritorious deeds are also the cause of suffering? Why is it that only desire and attachment, which are characterized by craving, are explained as the proximate cause of accomplishing suffering? Answer: Because craving is more important than karma and other afflictions in accomplishing the aggregates of suffering. As it is said in the sutra: What is the noble truth of the origin of suffering? It is craving, that is, the desire for rebirth, accompanied by joy, the state of extreme delight in this and that thing. In the Pramāṇavārttika it says: Although ignorance is said to be the cause of existence, it is not said to be ignorance, but craving. Because (craving) can draw the continuum, and it is not the karma that immediately follows it. The meaning is this: In general, both karma and afflictions are the cause of suffering, but afflictions themselves are the main ones, because if there are afflictions, then the previously accumulated karma can also accomplish life, and new karma that can draw life will also be accumulated; if there are no afflictions, then the accumulated karma, like a seed without moisture, cannot produce life, and new karma that can draw life will not be accumulated. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: Even if karma and body exist, but because one (affliction) is missing, the three factors cannot produce life, just like a sprout without a seed. It also says: Karma itself is not at fault, but it is the faulty agent, not the opposite. That is what is said above. Among other afflictions, craving is also the main one.
