There are two ways of saying this. Generally, the sound of characteristic is related to the agent and the object, so it applies to both the agent and the object. As it is said, "Through what is it represented, thereby knowing the characteristic?" and "What essence is represented?" Like this. When applied to the agent, because this represents, it is called characteristic, just as calling the person who cooks something a cook. Secondly, when applied to the object, because this is represented, it is called characteristic, just as calling the rice that is cooked cooked food. The first, the self-nature characteristic of the agent, is called the agent because it is a factor in generating understanding. The second, the self-nature characteristic of the object, is only understood by the former, so it is the object. Furthermore, the first, representing one's own unique essence is the self-nature characteristic, and representing in common with other dharmas is the common characteristic, these two. The first needs to avoid the three faults of non-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility, while the latter does not overemphasize the fault of over-pervasion. The first is also divided into: for the nature of that dharma not understood, as a factor of understanding, in meaning eliminating non-pervasion, over-pervasion, etc., is the characteristic of eliminating heterogeneous types; for that dharma generating doubt and inverted understanding as an antidote, in mind eliminating non-pervasion, etc., is the characteristic of eliminating wrong views. The first, no matter how the words are combined, the meaning is the main thing; the latter, not only is the meaning not inverted, but the expression of words that can cut off wrong views and doubts is the main thing. The self-nature characteristic of the object, as well as the representable and the basis, have the same meaning. Here, among the object and the agent, it is the latter. For the latter, there are also respective self and common characteristics. Eliminating heterogeneous types and wrong views, the former is the majority. The two things that can become form are: colored objects meeting internally, able to produce changes different from before, i.e., form produced by touch; meeting cannot produce changes, but similar to other forms with obstruction, can be inferred by mind as things occupying space, i.e., form produced by place analysis. Possessing either of these two can become form, if neither is complete, it cannot become form.

Because there is no self-nature. Regarding those invisible and intangible forms, whatever is imputed, empowered, and manifest are those that can become visible through the examination of objects; while invisible forms and particles are called forms through imputation. Or, because their dependent origination is visible, they are also called visible. To explain these in detail, there are two ways: through touch and through detailed explanation of visibility by examining objects. The first, in short, if asked what is visible? The answer is, touching with the hand, what can be touched through touch is visible, and so on, thirteen types are mentioned, which are also quoted here. In short, it can be summarized into two types of forms: sentient and non-sentient. If divided further, it can be divided into many types such as the contact of teeth and feet, so it is not definite for things only by this much. Hands, hunger and thirst, bees, flesh flies, and scorpions and snakes are forms counted as sentient beings, while others are not sentient. When they touch each other through contact, they create changes that are different from before, so they are visible. For example, touching with the hand causes the color of the flower to fade, or the body becomes weak and emaciated due to being afflicted by hunger and thirst. The second is that for manifest objects, such as blue, yellow, white, red, and other colors, and shapes such as long and short, it is possible to observe and examine. So, through what object is it observed? Through the mind in meditative equipoise on the unattractive and liberation, etc., and the mind that is in accordance with conceptual thought. Through the non-meditative equipoise mind that is not confused about the object of adherence to terminology, and those that are in accordance with conceptual thought. How is it observed? It is to clearly grasp and use this color and shape, this shape and that shape. Dreams and illusory forms, etc., although the forms of color and shape, etc., can be distinguished by deluded consciousness, they do not become the fault of being visible because the conventional consciousness does not grasp them in that way. Imputed and empowered forms are said to be in meditative equipoise because their visibility is shown through the examination of objects. Second, the definition of the aggregate of feeling
