If that is the case, then the attainment of all dharmas, both virtuous and non-virtuous, as well as those that are neutral, would be equal. Then, those that are inconsistent would also arise equally. Therefore, both are not acceptable. This is what was said. The cessation of perception should be understood through ground, attention, place, nature, and imputation. Among these, the ground refers to having abandoned desire for the third dhyana of the Peak of Existence, but not having abandoned desire for the fourth dhyana above it, thus belonging to the place of the fourth dhyana. Attention refers to contemplating beings without perception, as well as liberation with supreme bliss, and considering the cessation of perception as the path to attain liberation, thus entering into this samadhi. Therefore, it is said that this is attention preceded by generating a mind of definite renunciation towards samsara. The place refers to consciousness that enters along with associated mental factors, which are not stable for the mind and mental phenomena. Because these do not arise in all states without mind, and sometimes do not arise even in states with mind, therefore these are called unstable mind and mental phenomena. Nature refers to preventing those (mind and mental phenomena) from arising. That is, through the mind that enters into samadhi, temporarily making the unstable mind and mental phenomena incompatible with arising, which is the state of the body entering into samadhi. Imputation refers to imputing the term 'cessation of perception' upon that very thing. This is merely an imputed existence, not a real one. Therefore, if any samadhi that prevents the arising of the six aggregates is also called the cessation of perception, that is unreasonable, because it exists together with coarse consciousness. It is also unreasonable that anything that prevents the six aggregates along with their retinue, as well as the body of the one entering samadhi, is that, because the body is included in the ripening result and is neutral, while samadhi is virtuous. Therefore, it also cannot be the alaya consciousness and the afflicted mind. Apart from these ways, no real existence is found in the one entering samadhi. If the six aggregates do not arise,

That itself is the substance of the samadhi without perception, because it obstructs the arising of the six consciousnesses in the future. For example, like a bubble in water. If neither its fruit nor its essence can be determined by valid cognition, how can one understand that it exists? If it does not exist, then in that state, it is reasonable that the entering consciousness does not arise, because it does not arise. If there is something that obstructs their arising, then, if it is necessary to prove that the non-arising of the entering consciousness itself is a substance, how can it prove itself? Because the proof and the proven are the same. Furthermore, the mere non-arising of the entering consciousness is not what obstructs their arising. However, the body of the one who practices samadhi, which is produced by the mind that practices samadhi, is temporarily incompatible with the arising of the entering consciousness, and that itself is what obstructs the arising of the entering consciousness. Therefore, the samadhi without perception is not a substance. However, since there are terms such as "this person abides in the samadhi without perception" or "he has attained that samadhi," it is not merely a designation. This way, the samadhi of cessation and non-perception should also be understood. What is the samadhi without perception? What kind of person, in what realm, with what kind of mental aspect, practices samadhi? The person is an ordinary being who has gone astray in seeking pure conduct, because they have entered into the perverted paths of liberation and the means of liberation. As it is said in the Compendium: "For the samadhi without perception, neither the learner nor the non-learner enters into samadhi. Why? Because it has no object of wisdom, and above it, there is the most peaceful abiding. That birth is a deceptive place for those who have not attained virtuous qualities to attain them." The realm is first produced in the basis of gods or humans in the desire realm, and then the ripened result is experienced in the form realm. As it is said in the Definitive Analysis Compendium: The person belongs to the continuum of ordinary beings. The birth is first in

Furthermore, it arises, and below that, in the fourth dhyana of the form realm, it is experienced from the fruit. Thus it is taught. The aspect is that, relying on the mind of the fourth dhyana, perception is disease, sores, and pain. Non-perception is serene and excellent, having the aspect of refuting perception. Cessation samapatti is also shown by five things: ground, attention, place, essence, and imputation. Among these, the ground is: 'Having become free from desire for the sphere of nothingness and having gone beyond the peak of existence...' This is the ground of the peak of existence. And it is shown to possess transcendental wisdom, because without having attained the mind of the peak of existence, there is no freedom from desire for nothingness, and without having attained the transcendental path, there is no going beyond the peak of existence. Attaining the transcendental path is going beyond the peak of existence, because it has destroyed whatever is appropriate of the seen-to-be-abandoned and meditated-upon-to-be-abandoned of the peak of existence. Only the phrase 'having gone beyond the peak of existence' is mentioned, but it is not said whether one is free from desire for it or not, because some arhats also enter into this samapatti, therefore it is not said that they are free from desire for it. Also, some non-returners who have not become free from desire for the peak of existence also enter into this samapatti, therefore it is not said that they are free from desire. Some ordinary beings who have attained the mind of the peak of existence, although free from desire for nothingness, are not able to enter into this samapatti, therefore it is said 'having gone beyond the peak of existence.' Some noble ones, although having gone beyond the peak of existence, are not able to enter into this samapatti, therefore it is said 'having become free from desire for the sphere of nothingness.' Thus, these two phrases, 'having become free from desire for the sphere of nothingness' and 'having gone beyond the peak of existence,' show in order that the individual who enters into cessation must possess both special calm abiding and special insight. Among these, special calm abiding is the mind of the peak of existence, because it is the most excellent of all worldly abodes.
