also exist. Other than these two, there are the minds and mental factors of the three realms. There are also those that are neither of these two. These are the supramundane wisdoms. The objects of these investigations and analyses are the collections of names, sentences, and letters, and the meanings expressed by them. Their divisions are sevenfold, namely, conceptualization with signs, without signs, self-arising, seeking, individually discriminating, afflicted, and non-afflicted. The first is conceptualization concerning past meanings, and conceptualization skilled in terminology. The second is conceptualization concerning the future, and unskilled in terminology. The third is conceptualization concerning present objects. The fourth is of the nature of seeking and examining the essence and distinctions of phenomena. The fifth is of the nature of individually discriminating and examining that very thing. The sixth is conceptualizations that are in accordance with afflictions and near afflictions. The seventh is whatever conceptualization is in accordance with virtuous dharmas such as faith, and in accordance with the unobscured and unspecified. The function of investigation and analysis is that whatever is in accordance with pleasant feeling, that serves as the basis for abiding in pleasant contact, and whatever is in accordance with unpleasant feeling, that has the function of serving as the basis for not abiding in pleasant contact. Furthermore, the function of virtue and affliction is shown, namely, the function of virtuous dharmas such as faith is not only as previously shown, but also has the function of abandoning opposing aspects such as lack of faith. The function of afflictions such as desire and near afflictions such as anger is to cut off the arising of antidotes that are contrary to oneself, such as detachment and love. The aggregate of formations that are in accordance with the mind has been extensively explained. Now, since the formations that are not in accordance with the mind remain, wanting to explain them, therefore the question is asked: What are the formations that are not in accordance with the mind? Which dharmas are nominally existent in the state of form, mind, and mental factors?

Because, from the perspective of the qualified, it cannot be precisely expressed as itself or anything else, it cannot be indicated as "this" by following reason, but what is to be understood by following terminology is called non-associated formations. This is also not a truly existent substance, because it is not established by self-awareness like mind and mental factors, nor is it perceived by the senses like forms and sounds, nor can it be inferred from results like the senses of the eyes and so on. If it is not other than forms, mind, and mental factors, then whatever is the state of form is form, and whatever is the state of mind and mental factors is also that. It is not good to think that state and qualified are the same, because if the state attached to multiple qualifieds also becomes multiple, then the state attached to one qualified will also become one. For example, when birds are strung together, they are called a string of birds. If state and qualified are the same, then just as there are multiple qualifieds, there will also be multiple states—strings of birds. Moreover, each bird will be thought of as a string, because each of them is the same as the state—string. Furthermore, the same pellet, when placed in the ones place, becomes the number "one"; similarly, when placed in the tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. places, the corresponding number concept arises. If state and qualified are the same, then just as the qualified is one pellet, the state—the numbers of ones, tens, etc.—will also become the same, which is too extreme. Therefore, these dharmas attached to the state, such as strings and numbers, are not the same as the qualified. This has been well established. These, if they are truly from their own qualified, do not even exist in terminology, for example, when the same pellet is placed in the ones place and becomes the number "one," the meaning of the number "one" becomes a special attribute of the pellet.
