and the wisdom that possesses similarities to them. It causes the actions of body, speech, and mind to arise and cease without awareness. Because of not knowing what should be done and what should not be done, it has the function of being a basis for downfall. Distraction is that which causes the mind to wander from a virtuous object to an external object of affliction. That is, the three, such as desire, cause the mind to be distracted from a virtuous object, and this is labeled as distraction. Distraction is also of six types, such as distraction by its own nature. Distraction by its own nature refers to the five aggregates of consciousness, which by their very nature look outward and therefore cannot be evenly placed on an internal object. External distraction is when the mind, having engaged in virtue such as listening, wanders outward from those objects and turns towards the five desirable qualities such as forms and sounds. Internal distraction is when, having engaged in the virtue of meditative concentration, the mind becomes dull and sinks inward, or becomes agitated and distracted outward, and tasting the bliss of the meditative concentration that has been attained, etc., whatever prevents that virtue itself from progressing to complete purity is internal distraction. Distraction of signs is when, having become convinced that others possess qualities, etc., one thinks, 'Why not?', and then engages body and speech in virtue. If one is associated with this, one will quickly degenerate from virtue, therefore that is also distraction. Distraction of negative conditioning is when, relying on not having abandoned negative conditioning such as clinging to self, when a pleasant feeling arises from engaging in the virtue of meditative concentration, one initially clings to it in the form of 'I am,' or in the form of 'mine,' or in the form of pride, thinking 'I am!' Then, mixing with it and repeatedly emphasizing it, this is clinging to signs. Therefore, it also makes the virtuous side impure, so it is distraction. Distraction of attention is when, having arisen from a meditative concentration that has already been attained, one engages in another samadhi that has not been attained, and abandoning one's own vehicle that one has already entered, one engages in another vehicle, etc.

In short, it is agitation that causes the mind to scatter from its own state due to attending to various different ways. Among them, agitation by nature, agitation by signs, and agitation by attention are not near afflictions, but the Sutra only generally speaks of agitation, so that is why such distinctions are made. Agitation is the opposite of Samadhi, and since there is no separation from desire without separation from Samadhi, it is therefore the act of cutting off separation from desire. Sleep is based on the weakness of the cause of sleep, fatigue, heaviness of the body, and attending to the sign of darkness, etc., the unstable mind enters, the six consciousnesses, that is, the doors of the senses such as the eyes do not enter, but are gathered inward, that is sleep. Among them, afflicted sleep belongs to ignorance, and virtuous and neutral sleep can be established as appropriate discerning wisdom. Moreover, due to the difference in throwing, sleep can also become three types: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. Due to worldly terms, it can also become two types: timely and untimely. Due to the difference between benefiting and harming the senses, it can also become two types: reasonable and unreasonable. Among them, timely is midnight. Untimely is other than that. Reasonable is whether it is timely or not, it is beneficial for illness or in order to make the senses usable. Other than that is unreasonable. Excessive attachment to sleep will lead to falling away from all virtuous aspects, therefore it is the act of relying on failure to do things. Or rather, this is only the action of affliction and neutrality, not the action of virtue, because in the Yogacarabhumi it says: When a monk is diligent in virtuous Dharma, there will be a result of obtaining timely sleep. Regret refers to having previously had the thought of wanting to do that action, or not having thought so yourself, but being forced to do it by others, or being overwhelmed by afflictions and feelings, taking as its object the non-virtuous action of good or non-good deeds, thinking of my actions as evil.
