It is the function of serving as the basis for the arising of all afflictions and near afflictions. Harm that is the basis of intolerance is: harming oneself, hence without loving-kindness; causing others to harm, hence without compassion; and rejoicing in seeing harm, hence without joy. Or, these are the same in meaning, so the former is explained by the former, and the latter by the latter. This harms sentient beings with various harms such as killing, binding, burning, and sin, therefore it is the function of serving as the basis for complete vexation. The cause of the decline of higher discipline is the two, shamelessness and lack of embarrassment. Shamelessness is: although knowing that that action is not part of my job, I do not refrain from it because I do not care about myself, and it is the opposite of knowing shame. Lack of embarrassment is: although knowing that if that action is done, an unfavorable reputation will arise in the world, I do not look at others with embarrassment and do not refrain from it, and it is the opposite of having embarrassment. How are these two established as the nature of the three poisons that are the cause of all evil deeds? Because attachment and hatred cannot arise simultaneously. Those who are associated with these will engage in all afflictions and near afflictions, therefore these two are the function of assisting all of them. The basis for the decline of higher mind and higher wisdom training is also threefold: the door of the decline of the sign of calm abiding, the door of the decline of the sign of special insight, and the door of the decline of the sign of equanimity. The first is the two, dullness and sleep. The second is agitation and regret. The third is the remainder from lack of faith to behavior. If these are explained in order, dullness is: because the awareness of the object is not clear, the mind becomes sluggish, so that it cannot be used for virtuous actions, and this is because it is established as belonging to the part of ignorance. This is not inconsistent with all afflictions and near afflictions, therefore it is the function of assisting all of them. Agitation is mental distress.

It is through distracting the mind with objects that it cannot be calmed. That is, through remembering undesirable characteristics, such as previous coarseness and sharpness, and thus following after those categories of desire. This causes the mind to wander to undesirable objects, therefore it has the function of obstructing calm abiding. Non-belief is when the mind does not trust, believe, or like the order of the results of virtuous actions, the Three Jewels, cessation and the path, etc. It is the opposite of the three kinds of faith. This is also established as belonging to the category of delusion, which is ignorance about actions and their results. When there is no faith, there is no desire, and there is no joy in what is not desired, so it functions as a basis for laziness. Laziness is when one relies on the pleasure of sleeping, leaning, and chatting, and the mind does not rejoice in practicing virtuous dharmas, which is the opposite of diligence. This also belongs to the category of delusion. If one is associated with this, one does not apply oneself to virtuous things, so it has the function of being a basis for not engaging in virtuous things. Carelessness is when one does not cultivate the antidotes of contaminated and uncontaminated virtuous dharmas, and one does not guard one's mind against the contaminated dharmas that are in accordance with the arising of afflictions and near afflictions that should be abandoned, and one lets the mind wander freely. This is the aspect of the three poisons, which are the root of non-virtue such as desire, combined with laziness, which causes non-virtue to increase and virtue to decrease. This causes unwholesome dharmas that have not arisen to arise, and wholesome dharmas that have not arisen to not arise, and wholesome dharmas that have arisen to decline, therefore, it has the function of being a basis for the increase of non-virtue and the decrease of virtue. Forgetfulness is mindfulness that is associated with afflictions such as desire. This causes the mind to be unclear about virtuous objects by repeatedly remembering afflicted objects, therefore, it has the function of being a basis for the mind to be distracted from virtuous objects. Non-discernment is the affliction of delusion.
