When others discuss downfalls as before, being in the category of anger, one feels mentally tormented and uses harsh words to displease the one who speaks again. This refers to hurting others with harsh words, and it is called "retaliation," which is the basis for generating strong force. When others are urged by downfalls, some hide their downfalls out of ignorance, while others retaliate out of mental torment. Therefore, these two are called the basis for discussing downfalls. Because non-virtuous verbal misconduct increases and it is difficult to associate with those who possess it, it is an action that cannot touch the happiness of enjoying oneself with friends. Jealousy and stinginess are the basis of gain and respect. Jealousy refers to being completely taken by attachment to gaining offerings and respectful invitations, etc., and being unable to bear the excellence of others' wealth, retinue, and learning, etc., thereby disturbing one's own mind. This belongs to the category of hatred and can therefore be blamed. It is associated with displeasure, so it is displeasure, and by its power, it is an action that cannot touch happiness. Stinginess refers to, due to attachment to gain and respect, focusing on necessities such as food and clothing, clinging to them in various ways in the mind, and being unwilling to give them away. It belongs to the category of desire and can therefore be blamed. It is an action that, even for unnecessary items, becomes the basis for not diminishing items for the sake of hoarding. For those who seek gain and respect, these two situations inevitably arise. For example, being unable to bear the suffering of others gaining gain and respect, and being even more attached to the gain one has already obtained. Therefore, these two situations are called the basis of gain and respect. Among the deceit and deception that lead to the decline of life, deceit refers to being completely initiated due to excessive attachment to gain and respect, with the intention of deceiving others.

Hypocrisy is when someone who does not possess qualities such as discipline and samadhi pretends to have them and falsely displays non-virtuous bodily and verbal actions. This belongs to the category of desire and ignorance because if one were not attached to gain and honor and did not understand the faults of wrong livelihood, no one would hypocritically feign bodily and verbal conduct. This hypocrisy harms through the gains such as bedding obtained by feigning bodily and verbal conduct; therefore, it functions as the basis for harm through wrong means. Deceit is when, due to attachment to gain and honor, if others speak of one's transgressions, one tries to conceal them by confusing others through shifting the topic and other means, thereby truly concealing the fault. This also belongs to the category of desire and ignorance because if one were not afraid of losing gain and honor and did not understand the faults of transgressions, one would not act deceitfully. Concealment is openly hiding faults, whereas this involves adopting other methods of concealment, so they are different. Gaining genuine instructions leads to proper attention if obtained, but not showing one's own state is because one is not a suitable vessel for showing such a state; therefore, it functions as the basis for obstructing the attainment of genuine instructions. The arrogance that is the basis of disrespect towards the guru is the craving that is associated with the joy and pleasure that greatly agitates the mind upon seeing signs of long life such as being free from illness, having youthful vigor, and balanced elements, as well as any other contaminated perfections such as beauty, strength, power, intelligence, and compliance. This belongs to the category of desire. Although joy and displeasure have the same meaning, both joy and pleasure are mentioned to capture the special pleasure that makes the mind extremely happy. Since joy and pleasure are feelings, they should not belong to the category of desire; therefore, it is said that craving is associated with them. If one possesses this arrogance, all afflictions and secondary afflictions arise and are not far off; therefore, this
