Etc. Now, if the self exists, is it together with the aggregates, or is it of a nature without aggregates? If it is the first case, is the self the essence of the aggregates, or is it other than the aggregates? The first option is unreasonable, because the characteristics of the self and the aggregates are different. That is, those who speak of a self assert that the self is of a permanent and singular nature, while the aggregates are perceived by valid cognition as being of an impermanent and multiple nature. And different characteristics are also contradictory to being of the same essence. If it is according to the second case, does the self abide in the aggregates in a way that it relies on them, or do the aggregates abide in the self in a way that they rely on it? If it is the first case, the self will become impermanent, because it relies on the impermanent aggregates. If the support is impermanent, then those that rely on it are also seen as impermanent. For example, when a pond sways, the water sways, and when a wall collapses, the drawings that rely on it also perish. If you say that the aggregates are to be controlled by the self, so they rely on the self, but the self does not rely on them, even so, the self will not be an independent one that can control the aggregates as it pleases. Even though the self does not want it, the aggregates will change to other states, and will perish, and so on. Whatever controls something follows the wishes of that thing, like the body of a dancer and the monkey of a monkey trainer. The aggregates do not follow the wishes of the self, therefore the self does not control the aggregates. If the self is of a nature without aggregates, then the term "self" will become merely a name, and there will be no body or nature whatsoever. For one that does not possess aggregates, no body that has become a nature is perceived at all, like the son of a barren woman. Furthermore, as long as the self is bound by the aggregates, it is still in samsara, and when it is freed from the bonds of the aggregates, it is liberation, as those who speak of a self assert. Therefore, the self will necessarily be something that does not need to be obscured, because it is separated from the aggregates that bind samsara from the very beginning.

reason. With regard to the five aggregates of grasping, it is said that twenty views of the view of the aggregation of annihilation arise. How many are there that are regarded as self, and how many are regarded as belonging to self? The twenty views are from the view that "form is self" to the view that "consciousness is where self dwells." Among them, the five from the view that "form is self" to the view that "consciousness is self" are views of self. The remaining fifteen are views of what belongs to self. Why are fifteen views of what belongs to self? From "self is possessed of form" to "possessed of consciousness" is the view of what belongs to self, for example, like a man and ornaments, these five aggregates are related to self as attributes. The five from "form is mine" to "consciousness is mine" are also views of what belongs to self, for example, like a man and his wealth, the five aggregates are regarded as being under my control. The five from "self dwells in form" to "self dwells in consciousness" are also views of what belongs to self, for example, like the essence of butter in milk, or a lion dwelling in a mountain cave, the self does not enter into different parts of the body, but is regarded as entering into them by pervading them. Why are there said to be twenty views of the view of the aggregation of annihilation? Because all the existing attachments to "self" are limited to these twenty. Why? Because all the attachments to self exist in these aggregates. Some people believe that self and the aggregates are the same, while others believe that self and the aggregates are different. Those who believe that self and the aggregates are the same are limited to these five from "form is self" to "consciousness is self," because no other basis for attachment to self is found. Those who believe that self is different from the aggregates also exist in two ways: either self relies on the aggregates, or the aggregates rely on self. There is no other possibility, because no one would admit that there is a self that does not rely on the aggregates. The fault of being without a body mentioned earlier is only to refute the view, not to admit that there is such a view.
