Are the Tathagata existent after death? Non-existent? Both? Neither? These are all. What the body is, that is also the life, and the body is something else, and the life is something else. These two depend on the body and the life. Why are these called unanswered views? Because when some people asked the Tathagata these questions, the Tathagata knew that they were asking based on the self, and if he answered that there is an end or no end, etc., he would think that it is inappropriate to speculate on the special Dharma that has no difference, and he would think that if he denies the difference, it becomes meaningless, so he does not say anything. That is why it is called unanswered. As it is said in the Ratnavali: "If asked whether the world has an end, The Victorious One remains silent and does not answer, Why is such a profound Dharma, Not spoken to beings who are not vessels, Therefore, the wise should know, That the all-knowing knows everything." That is what is said. Now this should be analyzed. For example, what is the difference between the sixty-two views and the fourteen unanswered views? How are they distinguished? In this regard, before the Tathagata turned the wheel of Dharma in Jambudvipa, all those views of the two extremes of permanence and annihilation of the outsiders are all included in the sixty-two views mentioned earlier. In short, the sixty-two views are established in this way. When the Tathagata turned the wheel of Dharma, some non-Buddhist hermits summarized the meanings of the sixty-two views into fourteen extremes and asked, and these are the fourteen unanswered views. Therefore, if the various views are analyzed in detail, they will become the sixty-two views; if they are briefly summarized, they will become the fourteen unanswered views. If they are very brief, they can be reduced to the two views of permanence and annihilation, or to the two views of clinging to extremes and wrong views. Are all these forms necessarily included in the sixty-two views?

It is not so. Before the turning of the wheel of Dharma, all the views that were praised and clung to by the ascetics and Brahmins of the holy land were limited to these sixty-two. The sutra says only "sixty-two views." The forms of views that arise in other places and at other times are limitless, so their names cannot be spoken by anyone other than the Buddha. Similarly, the views that are not answered are not limited to these fourteen, but when someone asked the Thus-Gone One, because the views that are not answered are limited to these fourteen, the sutra says that there are fourteen views that are not answered. These fourteen are not definitive about things, because in other places, times, and circumstances, other views that should not be answered do not arise. All evil views can be reduced to either eternalism or nihilism. Any view that does not rely on the extreme of eternalism or nihilism is a correct view. Why do they try to ask the Thus-Gone One through these fourteen ways? Because those who have preconceived notions have two kinds of Dharma to ask about: complete defilement and purification. Relying on the side of purification, they asked four questions about Nirvana. Relying on the other side, they asked the rest of the questions. The side of complete defilement can also be reduced to the inner self and the outer container world, so they asked questions revolving around the self and the world. Wanting to know their initial limit, they asked four questions, such as whether the self and the world are permanent or impermanent. Wanting to know their final limit, they asked four questions, such as whether they have boundaries or not. Because the current nature of the external world can be observed through manifestation, it is easy to understand, so no questions were asked about its current essence. But the nature of the inner self is difficult to understand, so some people think that this body itself
