When some sentient beings die and are reborn in the desire or form realms, some seers with clairvoyance observe what their previous cause was, but do not see it, and thus consider body and mind, etc., to arise suddenly. Relying on speculation, they assert that there is no cause, just as rain and wind, etc., arise suddenly, and they see that trees sometimes suddenly flower and bear fruit, and sometimes do not, and thus assert that self and world have no cause. The four cases of asserting finitude and infinitude are: some non-Buddhist seers with clairvoyance want to correctly seek whether the world has an end or not, and when they remember the eon of destruction, they have the notion of finitude. When they remember the eon of formation, they have the notion of infinitude. Furthermore, when they want to correctly seek the boundary of a vast area, when they do not see below beyond the Avīci hell, and above below the fourth dhyāna, and do not see the other shore in all directions, they have the notion of finitude below and above, and the direct direction has the notion of infinitude. The former is based on the clairvoyance of remembering previous lives to infer the limit of time. The latter is based on the clairvoyance of the divine eye to infer the limit of space. A view inconsistent with the latter also clings to the difference of letters, but not to the difference of meaning, thus arising the notion of neither finite nor infinite. These are called inferring the past extreme because they respectively speculate on the past and present realms, because the past and present have already occurred, so they are the past extreme. The brief summary of these is: Some eternalists and causelessness, As well as finitists and deniers of gods and humans. The four cases of those who deny gods and humans are: Those whose minds are immature, Those with pride of realization, Those whose minds are mature but uncertain, And those who are weak in knowledge and completely ignorant. The path of excellence is virtue and non-virtue, The path of definite goodness is suffering and origin, and cessation.

And, if questions are asked based on these paths, they vow, "I will abandon gods and humans." Regarding those questions that should not be avoided, which are based on the cause of attaining the state of immortal, completely pure gods, they evade the questions by using other words or by responding in a way that agrees with the opponent. Among these, the first type of rebuttal is due to fear and hesitation of lying and being ignorant, so they do not answer clearly. The second is due to fear of their own realization, fear of being refuted and examined, and also fear of lying and wrong views, so they do not answer clearly, "I possess the pride of realization." The third is because of fear and hesitation of being refuted and examined, lying, and wrong views, so they do not answer clearly, "I am not certain." Instead of answering clearly, they constantly ask others and agree with them, thereby evading with words. They think, "If opponents come, I should prepare to deal with them there." It should be recognized that this thought is what appears here. There are forty-four views regarding the extremes of future existence, namely: sixteen for those who assert that there is perception, eight for those who assert that there is no perception, eight for those who assert that there is neither perception nor non-perception, seven for those who assert annihilation, and five for those who assert liberation in this life. Among these, the sixteen views of those who assert that there is perception are: the view that the self is a being with form and perception, a being without form and perception, a being both with and without form and perception, and a being neither with nor without form and perception, these four; the view that the self has boundaries, does not have boundaries, both has and does not have boundaries, and neither has nor does not have boundaries and has perception, these four; the view that the self is happy, suffering, both happy and suffering, and neither happy nor suffering and has perception, these four; and the view that the self is one, different, small, and infinite and has perception. The eight views of those who assert that there is no perception are: the view that the self is a being with form and no perception.
