I have spoken thus. Thus, wrong view does not destroy the self-nature of past virtuous roots, nor does it destroy the fruition, but it does make the power smaller and the fruition delayed, this is established. Why is it that future virtuous roots that are born and obtained become without seeds, and those that arise from practice become without mastery? Answer: For those who do not have wrong views, future virtuous roots that are born and obtained naturally arise without effort; future virtuous roots that arise from practice can arise when causes and conditions are applied. Therefore, for those people, those virtuous roots are successively called having seeds and having mastery. When the wrong view as described above arises in the mindstream of beings, as long as the power of that view's activity has not diminished in the mindstream, then those virtuous roots that are born and obtained and those that arise from practice do not even have the possibility of arising in that mindstream, because the person who has that form of view is extremely dissimilar to the aspects of virtue. Therefore, for that person, those virtuous roots neither have seeds nor have mastery, this is established. Thus, I have understood in this way the meaning of wrong view cutting off virtuous roots. Having thus shown the nature of the views, the analysis of the differences based on them is: among these five views, how many are the views of superimposition that take non-existence as existence? How many are the views of defamation that take existence as non-existence? Answer: The first four are views of superimposition, because the first two successively take the five aggregates of grasping of knowable objects as the self-nature of self and mine, and take this as the difference of permanence or annihilation. The latter two successively take inferior views as superior, etc., and take precepts and asceticism preceded by evil views as purification and liberation, etc. The only one is

The view of nihilism is mostly a view that denies causality, because it has the form of thinking that there are no causes and effects, etc. The reason for saying "mostly" is that there are also wrong views that have the form of superimposition, such as considering Ishvara as the creator, etc., to show that it is not necessarily just nihilism. Here, only five views are taught. If you want to know from how many forms of these five views the views that cling to the past extreme and the views that cling to the future extreme that appear in the sutras arise, then there are eighteen views that cling to the past extreme, as follows: four of those who speak of permanence, four of some who speak of permanence, two of those who speak of no cause, four of those who speak of having or not having limits, and four of those who speak of immortal confusion. Among them, the four of those who speak of permanence are some non-Buddhist meditators who, with the direct perception of remembering past lives, remember twenty, forty, and eighty kalpas, and with the direct perception of the divine eye, see that beings, good or bad, die and are born in that very place, and say that the self and the world are permanent as they see them. The four of some who speak of permanence are that some of the retinue of the Great Brahma die and are born as humans, and practice meditation in solitude, and generate direct perception, and when they see that the Great Brahma has not died, they say that the Great Brahma is permanent and the other gods are impermanent. Or the Great Brahma sees that the great elements are impermanent and the mind does not cease, and thinks that the elements are impermanent and the mind is permanent. Or someone who is greatly deceived by the Playful Gods loses mindfulness in play and dies, and is born as a human, and generates direct perception, and when he sees that his former companions have not died, he thinks that those deceived by the Playful Gods are impermanent, and the others are permanent. Or some who are confused in their minds about divine friends die by their power, and are born as humans, and generate direct perception as before, and when they see that the others have not died, they think that the divine confused ones are impermanent, and the others are permanent. That is their view. The two of those who speak of no cause rely on meditation and speak of no cause.
