It can delay the maturation of virtuous deeds, and for the rewards arising from future virtuous deeds, it does not even possess the nature of seeds, and the rewards arising from actions are not autonomous. Why does it delay the maturation of previous virtuous deeds? Because a person with this view does not practice even a little virtue and acts without restraint towards evil deeds, therefore, for a considerable time, they will continuously experience the suffering of the lower realms. It is not that wrong views can uproot the maturation of previous virtuous deeds, because the previous karma had already cast its maturation at the time of sowing. Moreover, the specific imprints of that karma, even when wrong views arise, only become weakened, but are not completely eliminated. If nourished by correct views, it will still produce its own fruit. If that is the case, then, isn't it said in the scriptures: "A thousand eons accumulated, Giving and offering to the Buddha, All virtuous deeds, One anger can destroy." etc.? This also refers to the fact that anger towards a special object, the powerful karma of anger, can suppress previous virtuous deeds, merely delaying the maturation, but not completely uprooting the seeds. Because the nature of virtuous deeds is inherently stronger than evil deeds. For example, no matter how strong the darkness is, it can only be suppressed by the light of a lamp, but cannot make it completely disappear. Let alone evil deeds uprooting the maturation of virtuous deeds, even virtuous deeds, worldly virtuous deeds cannot uproot the maturation of evil deeds previously done and accumulated. Among worldly virtuous deeds, the most powerful are meditation and the formless absorptions, even these can only delay the maturation of evil deeds done and accumulated, but cannot uproot their maturation. If they could be uprooted, then ordinary beings born in the higher realms would not be able to immediately be reborn in the lower realms after dying from those places.

Therefore, it is because the ripening of non-virtuous actions accumulated in previous lives is eradicated by absorption, and because no new actions leading to rebirth in the lower realms are accumulated in that life. If someone asks: Aren't dharani mantras, confession of sins, etc., which are said to be antidotes to karmic obscurations, said to purify karmic obscurations? The answer is: Those also only make the power of the seeds of karmic obscurations smaller, and only delay the maturation of the results through that means, but do not eradicate the seeds. Because, even for the meditative stabilizations and formless absorptions that cause rebirth in a state of peaceful bliss for many great eons, as previously explained, there is no power to eradicate the ripening of karmic obscurations, then how can one expect such power from virtuous actions belonging to the desire realm, such as physical and verbal actions, reciting mantras, confessing sins, prostrating and circumambulating, etc.? In this way, the powerful forces of virtuous and non-virtuous actions are considered to destroy each other's power and delay the maturation of results. Therefore, the Subduer teaches sentient beings to engage in or refrain from those powerful virtuous and non-virtuous actions. Thus, it is said that if one becomes angry with a Bodhisattva, it eradicates the merit of a thousand eons, and that reciting special dharani mantras eliminates obscurations, etc. As long as one has not attained the path that transcends the world, the ripening of the virtuous or non-virtuous actions done and accumulated will not be wasted. Therefore, it is said, 'I declare that the ripening of actions done and accumulated will not be unexperienced.' As it is said: 'The actions of sentient beings, even after hundreds of eons, will not be lost. When the conditions come together and the time arrives, they will ripen into their own fruit.' Etc. Past virtuous actions, their own nature, are also not destroyed by wrong views, because the past has already arisen, and what has arisen cannot be destroyed by antidotes, because things do not exist for even a moment to have any effect. Therefore, in the Pramāṇavārttika it is also said: 'In order to destroy the faults that are about to arise, whatever prevents the faults, it can change the power of the action that produces them. How can what has already been done disappear?'
