Nothing whatsoever is established in me, yet due to the power of habituation from beginningless time, the thought arises that the aggregates are "I," and following that thought, names such as person and sentient being are applied. Therefore, persons, sentient beings, carts, and so forth, should be understood by following the conventional terms of the world, and not by following reason, for it is impossible to point out "this is it." The object of the innate view of self is the distinctions made by the permanent, singular, etc., self fabricated by the Particularists and others, and those are not established even conventionally. Because all forms of views arise in dependence on the view of self, therefore, the view of self is the function of being the basis of all views. The extreme view is: focusing on the aggregates that take the object as their focus, and with the aspect of the view of self, believing that the self is permanent because it is unchanging, or that it is annihilated because it abandons its kind and does not rejoin the continuum, and whatever is the acceptance of truly following these views. Liberation from cyclic existence necessarily arises from the Middle Way, which abandons permanence and annihilation. This extreme view contradicts the Middle Way, and therefore, it has the function of obstructing liberation from the Middle Way. View of holding views as supreme is: whatever is the acceptance of truly following the views just mentioned and the five aggregates on which those views are based, as supreme, principal, and so forth. Because it is outstanding, it is "supreme"; because there is nothing more excellent than it, it is "principal"; because it surpasses others, it is "especially superior"; because there is nothing comparable to it, it is "sacred." Alternatively, these words have the same meaning, but they are mentioned to explain one by the other. If it is reasonable to hold those views as supreme, etc., then how does one hold their place, the aggregates? If there is an attachment to a view as a true view, then because the view has a pure form, one will hold the aggregate that possesses that view as a supreme person or a sacred person, etc. That arises because of holding the view as supreme, and therefore it is the view of holding views as supreme. This view of holding views as supreme, because of attachment to the view of self as supreme, etc.,

In short, it is the basis for strongly clinging to wrong views, and has such a function. Holding precepts and asceticism as supreme refers to precepts and asceticism that are preceded by wrong views, and focusing on the five aggregates that closely take the places corresponding to these, and thinking that through these precepts and asceticism, the defilements of sins can be eliminated, one can be liberated from the bonds of afflictions, one can definitely be liberated from samsara, and the endurance of correctly following observation, etc. Among them, precepts refer to the nature of abandoning immoral precepts. Asceticism refers to the definite signs of one's own body and speech actions. For example, the sons of Shakya hold the mark of wearing robes, and hold other ascetic's implements. Non-Buddhists hold rosaries, Brahman threads, kusha grass, and animal skins, etc. If one thinks that precepts and asceticism can eliminate sins and attain liberation, then how should one view the aggregates? If one clings to precepts and asceticism as the correct path to liberation that eliminates sins, then for the aggregates corresponding to this, one will also strongly cling to the idea that the aggregates are the self that can be eliminated of sins and attain liberation through precepts and asceticism. No matter how much one strives with precepts and asceticism related to wrong views, one can at most obtain the position of higher realms, and it is impossible to obtain definite benefits through eliminating sins, etc., because this does not harm the clinging to the cause of samsara—the self. Therefore, if one strives to practice precepts and asceticism for the sake of liberation, but cannot produce the result of higher realms, then this is a futile basis, and has such a function. If these precepts and asceticism can also produce the fruit of heavenly realms, then why is it said that the effort on these precepts and asceticism is futile? Because one would not strive to practice these precepts and asceticism merely for the sake of heavenly realms. If the result of these precepts and asceticism is only heavenly realms, then who would engage in severe asceticism such as precepts and asceticism that contradict the happiness of already attained heavenly realms? Therefore, strive to practice precepts and asceticism for the sake of liberation
