Furthermore, there are two types of self-grasping: innate and imputed. The first is the mind that arises spontaneously due to the force of habituation from beginningless time, even in beings who have taken birth as animals, with thoughts such as, "May I be happy, may I not suffer." As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika, "Because one desires to be happy or not to suffer, the thought 'I' arises; this is the innate [self-grasping] in sentient beings." This is how it is stated. Imputed self-grasping arises from the power of studying and contemplating the tenets taught by bad spiritual friends, grasping at a self that is either the same as or different from the aggregates, and then examining it, attributing to it qualities such as annihilation, possessing qualities, or lacking qualities. The former follows all sentient beings due to the force of habituation from beginningless time, and is therefore called innate. The latter arises suddenly in some due to the power of conditions, and is therefore called imputed. The object of innate view of self is beings, persons, and individuals, and therefore exists conventionally. Otherwise, the terms person and being, etc., would become untenable. What are these terms, person and being? These are to be understood by following the terminology of worldly people who have been obscured by the darkness of ignorance since beginningless time, and no one can point to them and say, "This is it," by following reason. Therefore, those who say that the continuum of aggregates is a person, and others who say that the continuum of the ālaya-consciousness is a person, etc., have deviated from the heart of the Sugata's teaching, the meaning of selflessness. For they actually accept the ālaya and the five aggregates themselves as the self, since self, person, being, and individual, etc., are merely different names. In that case, it would be unreasonable to say that the Śrāvaka Āryas directly see selflessness, since they do not see the aggregates or the ālaya as being without inherent existence. Grasping at a self is also not an object of imputation.

Then, (if) so, the (five) aggregates will become the object of the real. It is also unreasonable for the Tathagata to refute the (five) aggregates as self. Didn't you also say that "the person is conventionally existent"? In this way, whether (the person) is one with or different from the (five) aggregates, either say that the (five) aggregates are the self, or follow those who say I am mine. I only said that the person is conventionally existent, but I did not say that it is one entity with the (five) aggregates or that it exists differently. Why? If one says one entity and different entities, then saying that the person is conventionally existent is just talk, otherwise it becomes an admission that the person is real. Even so, aren't you following those who say the inexpressible person? If one admits that the person is real and says that it is neither the same nor different from the (five) aggregates, if this is true, then I do not admit the so-called entity of the person at all. How can there be the same opportunity as those who say that the person is an entity? Conventional existence is only nominally imputed by consciousness, but it does not actually exist, so when analyzed with reason, it is neither one nor different. For example, a chariot is not conventionally non-existent, because a chariot can be driven, etc., because these names can be seen. Moreover, the meaning of conventional existence is only circulated in the names of the world. The chariot and its parts, such as rivets, wheels, and axles, are also not one, because when these parts exist separately, the concept of a chariot does not arise. Nor is it a different entity, because when these parts are separated, no other chariot is seen. Even when these parts are gathered together, no other chariot entity is produced, because even then no chariot other than these parts is seen. However, when these parts are gathered together, without considering whether it is one or different, the thought "this is a chariot" arises, and then following this thought, the name "chariot, chariot" is attached. Like a chariot, if one analyzes the person, then whether it is one with or different from the (five) aggregates
