Doubt is the karma that serves as the basis for the arising of all afflictions. Fourth, the pride arising from competition and manifest arrogance is that which, relying on the cause of the self of the view of the aggregates of destruction, feels content in one's own lineage, knowledge, and power, and appears in an arrogant manner in terms of Dharma. Although it is not different in essence from contentment, pride transforms into seven forms due to the difference in the cause of contentment. This pride causes arrogance towards the lama and those with qualities similar to the lama, not serving with body and speech, and disrespect. And because of its influence, one engages in misdeeds of body and speech, such as belittling others, and therefore it is also the karma that serves as the basis for the arising of suffering in samsara. As it is said in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": 'Pride leads to evil destinies, destroys the joys of humans, and becomes a slave who eats the food of others, or becomes a foolish and ugly person.' This is what is said. Sixth, doubt that does not engage in what should be cultivated and abandoned is the wavering in the form of whether truths, karma and its results, and the Three Jewels exist or not, are or are not, and so on. This doubt also has two forms, differentiated by whether it is afflicted or non-afflicted. Non-afflicted doubt is wavering about any form of action, for example, thinking, 'Is there a god in this direction or not?' and so on. These are included in the obscuration of knowledge, so they are not called afflictions. Afflicted doubt has the characteristics described above. Because it obstructs higher realms and liberation, its faults are very great, therefore it is an affliction. That is, doubting karma and its results and the Three Jewels becomes an obstacle to higher realms. Doubting the nature of the truths becomes an obstacle to liberation. If one doubts karma and its results and the truths, one will not engage in abandoning and adopting them and properly directing one's mind towards them for the sake of higher realms and liberation. Therefore, doubt is the karma that serves as the basis for not engaging in virtuous aspects that have become the means to higher realms and liberation. Fifth, one should also examine the view that is manifestly attached to wrong teachings and serves as a cause for practice.

Regarding the nature and distinctions of views, there are two parts to discuss. Firstly, these views, although not differentiated in terms of defiled wisdom, are shown to be distinct due to differences in their objects and aspects, and are therefore divided into five, including the view of the aggregates of decay. Among these, the view of the aggregates of decay is as follows: As stated in the sutras, those ascetics and Brahmins who hold views of self and what belongs to self do so because of these five aggregates of grasping. As it is said, taking the five aggregates of grasping as their object, and with the aspect of clinging to an enjoyer, they truly follow after self, and with the aspect of clinging to what is enjoyed, they follow after what belongs to self; this is the view of the aggregates of decay. That is to say, when one views one's own aggregates as self, one will view the aggregates of others, such as sons and wives, as what belongs to self. When one views a part of one's own aggregates as self, one will view the others as belonging to self. For example, those who, like the Samkhyas, wish to understand the self, when they view the aggregates composed of mind and mental factors as self, they will view the form aggregates, such as the eyes, as what belongs to self. Those who, like the Vaisheshikas, consider the self to be material, when they cling to the form aggregates, such as the eyes, as self, they will view the name aggregates as what belongs to self. The names for truly following after the view of self include forbearance, and so on. Because one believes in it and is not afraid of it, it is forbearance. Because one seeks its meaning, it is desire. Because one thoroughly distinguishes it, it is wisdom. Because one obtains certainty, it is thought. Because one clings to it as a virtue, it is a view. Alternatively, the earlier terms are explained by the later terms. Why is it called the view of the aggregates of decay? Because the object of this view, the five aggregates of grasping, each have the nature of decaying on their own and being accumulated from many parts, they are called aggregates of decay. Because one focuses on the object that decays and is accumulated, and views it with an aspect that is not of decay, it is therefore called the view of the aggregates of decay. The very name 'view of the aggregates of decay' indicates that the object of this view is not a true self. This is because those who assert the existence of a self acknowledge that the self is of a permanent and singular nature.
