Therefore, this is an unsuitable agent. Because afflictions arise appropriately under virtuous deeds. Therefore, it is said, what is desire? This also comes from the Compendium of Determinations: Where are the abodes of afflictions? It is said: There are six. Namely: with ignorance, in the object that is pleasing and completely defiled; with ignorance, in the object that is displeasing and completely defiled; with inappropriate attention, in the object that is completely defiled; with ignorance, in one's own aggregates of clinging; with inferior, equal, and superior beings; with perverted views on what should be attained but is not, and perverted views on qualities; with ignorance and inappropriate attention, listening to non-virtuous teachings; with ignorance and inappropriate attention, listening to non-virtuous teachings and laziness. Among them, the first is because of delighting in encountering. The second is because of delighting in separating. The third is because of perversion in the object. The fourth is because of competing and manifesting pride. The fifth is because of manifestly clinging to and practicing wrong teachings. The sixth is to be known as the abode because of not practicing and not reversing. As it is said, the afflictions arising from the six abodes are also six. Among them, the first abode, the desire arising from delighting in encountering, refers to clinging and being attached to the bodies and enjoyments of the three realms, making it difficult to separate. Just as oil and the like seep into places like cloth, which is difficult to remove even with effort, so too, desire seeps into and pervades its own object, making it difficult to separate from that object even with great effort. Therefore, it is called clinging. Because it possesses the three kinds of suffering, the aggregates of the three realms are suffering. And that suffering is accomplished by the power of desire, form, and formless craving. Therefore, desire is the agent that serves as the basis for generating suffering. Secondly, delighting in separating
