Furthermore, these are twofold, distinguished by wisdom and individual investigation. Wisdom is of four kinds, distinguished by the wisdom arising from maturation, the wisdom arising from scripture, the wisdom arising from thought, and the wisdom arising from realization. These are, in order: the wisdom obtained by birth, the wisdom arising from hearing, the wisdom arising from thinking, and the wisdom arising from meditation. Individual investigation is simply wisdom that is stable. "Stable" refers to wisdom, diligence, and samadhi. Since it is impossible for wisdom to possess two substances equally, therefore, what is called individual investigation here is the wisdom that possesses samadhi and diligence equally. Diligence is the mind being manifestly delighted in accomplishing virtue, and it is the antidote to laziness. What kind of virtue is the mind delighted in? First, it is the armor that has the characteristic of wanting to accomplish virtue, and then, like putting on armor, it is the application of engaging in accomplishing virtue. The mind is not daunted or discouraged by the vastness of what is to be accomplished, and it is not turned away from the application by the harm of opposing factors, and it does not hold that a little virtue is enough. Whatever manifest delight there is in those objects is, in order, the diligence of armor, application, non-discouragement, non-reversal, and non-contentment. These are explained following the words of the sutra passages: "Having power over virtuous dharmas, having diligence, having joy, and being steadfast in conduct, not abandoning effort." In accordance with this, the Ornament of the Sutras also says: "First is the diligence of armor, then the diligence of properly entering into application. Not being daunted, not being disturbed, not knowing contentment, is diligence." If diligence is merely said to be manifest delight in action, it would be wrong if manifest delight in non-virtuous action were also considered diligence. Therefore, it is specifically emphasized that the mind is delighted in objects such as armor. Delight in non-virtue is blameworthy and is itself laziness, not virtue.
