Then, do mental events and the five aspects mentioned earlier not possess similarities? Why is it that mental events are said to follow the mind because they share five aspects with the mind, but the mind is not said to follow mental events? It is said: Minds each have their own definite bases. For example, eye consciousness relies on the eye sense organ, and similarly, mind consciousness relies on the mind sense organ, and so on. However, mental events do not have their own definite bases, because even a single mental event relies on all the sense organs due to the power of conditions. Thus, consciousnesses, because they each have a definite basis, rely on their own unique basis and have an independent basis. Mental events, however, are not like that and do not have an independent basis. Therefore, minds rely on their own place and do not rely on the place of mental events, so they do not follow mental events in terms of basis. Mental events, however, rely on the place of the mind in whose retinue they arise, and therefore, they are also called followers of the mind in terms of having the same basis. Similarly, consciousnesses, because they each have a definite object, focus on an independent object and not on the object of mental events. Mental events, however, do not have a definite object, so they do not have an independent object. Therefore, they focus on the same object that the mind focuses on, and so they are also followers of the mind in terms of having the same object. Consciousnesses, because they each have a definite object, therefore also have definite aspects. Mental events, however, because their object is not definite, do not necessarily have a definite aspect. Therefore, mental events follow the aspect of the mind, but the mind does not follow the aspect of mental events. This is said in terms of having the same aspect; otherwise, there is no fault in saying that mental events do not follow the aspect of the mind. Because in the *Yogācārabhūmi* and so on, the mind and mental events have the same object but different aspects.

It is also explained to completely cut off various (afflictions). The continuums of the various consciousnesses are such that only one homogeneous type arises in a single continuum, so they are entities that are definite. But mental factors are not like that, because when various heterogeneous consciousnesses arise simultaneously, various mental factors such as feeling also arise in their retinue. Therefore, mental factors also follow the mind due to the definiteness of time and entity. Thus, mental factors follow the mind through five aspects such as having the same basis, but minds do not follow mental factors. These should be understood. Now, it should be examined which of these mental factors arise in the retinue of which consciousness. Regarding how many mental factors arise in the retinue of the Alaya consciousness and the afflicted mind in the eight aggregates of consciousness, it will be explained in the section that establishes them. Therefore, examine what arises in the retinue of the six consciousnesses. Among them, there are two mental factors that arise in the retinue of the five aggregates of consciousness: the corresponding arising of agreeing and the co-emergent corresponding arising. Among them, the mental factors of the sense consciousnesses that arise in accordance are only the five omnipresent mental factors such as intention, and there are no others. This is what I have understood from scripture and reasoning. Among them, for the time being, the scriptural proof is that in the treatises of the Yogacara school, when showing the companions of the five sense consciousnesses, (the text says:) What are the companions? That is, the mental factors that arise simultaneously with it and are in accordance with it, such as attention, contact, feeling, perception, and intention. Because it is said that way. The reasoning is like this: the nature of the sense consciousnesses is non-discriminating, while the remaining mental factors, such as determining objects, virtue, afflictions, and near afflictions, mostly discriminate and measure, because they have a definite aspect. How do they have aspects such as discriminating and measuring? That is because of their respective natures.
