That's easy to understand. Differentiation by object is: From "Whoever knows the characteristics and also knows them correctly," to "Also knows the realm of nothingness correctly." It needs to be explained. Explaining it is: What is the nature of what is called "perception with characteristics"? Here, there are three characteristics: the characteristic of terminology, the characteristic of elaboration, and the characteristic of clear appearances of objects. With the first characteristic, perception with characteristics is the perception of those who are skilled in the terminology of the connection between name and meaning, other than the perception of those who are not skilled in the terminology of the connection between name and meaning, because they clearly grasp the meaning through names. With the second characteristic, perception with characteristics is the perception other than the perception of those who are without the characteristics of elaboration such as form, and who abide in the realm of reality, because they completely cut off the characteristics of compounded phenomena such as form. With the third characteristic, perception with characteristics is all perceptions other than the perception of those who abide in the peak of existence, because they completely cut off the clear objects and aspects. There are also three perceptions without characteristics that are separate from these three characteristics. Among them, the perception without the characteristic of terminology is: the perception that is not a perception with the characteristic of terminology, that is, the perception of children and others who are not skilled in the terminology of the connection between name and meaning, because when they see objects such as form, although a cognition of the object arises, they cannot clearly express the object through names, such as "This is form." The perception without the characteristic of elaboration is: the perception that is not a perception with the characteristic of elaboration, that is, the perception of those who abide in the realm of reality, because it is focused on cessation that is free from all elaboration, and it is the absence of completely cutting off the characteristic of elaboration. The perception without the characteristic of clear objects is: the perception that is not a perception with the characteristic of clear objects, that is, all the perceptions of those who abide in the peak of existence, because they cannot clearly utilize objects and aspects.

If so, these formless perceptions are not completely devoid of forms, as that would lead to the fault of being non-perceptions. Therefore, what is slightly deficient in form is called formless, like calling a daughter without a belly "mother without a belly." A small perception is one that fully knows the desire realm with perception, because desire is bad due to having many afflictions and short life, etc. A vast perception is one that knows the form realm with perception, because it is superior compared to desire, with long life and fewer afflictions, etc. A limitless perception is one that knows the sphere of infinite space and the sphere of infinite consciousness with perception, because it completely determines that the object is limitless. The perception of nothingness is one that knows the sphere of nothingness with perception, because it completely determines that there is nothing to be grasped. This focus on the desire realm, etc., should also be understood as referring to the perception of one's own realm. For minds and mental factors other than perception, as mentioned before, the characteristics of having forms, being formless, and the characteristics of the desire realm, etc., are known only by perception, because perception distinguishes by completely determining forms. Therefore, only perception is differentiated into having forms, etc., and not others. After the aggregate of perception, intending to definitively establish the aggregate of formation, the question is asked: what is the nature of the aggregate of formation? This has two aspects: a brief statement and a detailed explanation. First, the brief statement is the six groups of thoughts, such as the thought arising from contact through the aggregation of the eye, and so on. Are all mental events other than feeling and perception, and non-associated formations, not the aggregate of formations? Why is thought itself mainly mentioned when showing the aggregate of formations? Because thought is the most important among others. Why? Because it precedes other formations, like faith and other virtuous qualities arising from thought.
