There are five types of subtle particles of objects such as form, four types of subtle particles of the four elements such as earth, and one subtle particle that exists as substantial form belonging to the sphere of phenomena. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in that very text, it is said that, with regard to the first, there are five faults in considering subtle particles to be substantial, and there are also five benefits in establishing subtle particles as merely imputed. These are as follows: Thinking that subtle particles exist in aggregates of form with their own characteristics; thinking that subtle particles arise and cease; thinking that subtle particles meet and separate from others; thinking that aggregates of form are merely temporary states of accumulated subtle particles; and thinking that aggregates of subtle particles produce coarse, other substances—these five are improper ways of thinking about subtle particles. When the nature of subtle particles in aggregates of form is completely severed by wisdom, abandoning the notion of grasping them as a single whole, abandoning the view of the destructible aggregates that are caused by them, abandoning pride in thinking "I am," suppressing the afflictions such as desire that rely on them, and the characteristics of grasping and being grasped quickly disintegrate—this is the benefit of thoroughly analyzing the coarse with wisdom and establishing subtle particles. Among these, the first subtle particle exists only as an imputation and does not truly arise or cease. However, material subtle particles mostly become objects of sense consciousness without depending on others, and therefore they are also substantial. The first is also partless, while the second is with parts. Aggregates of form are not the nature of accumulated first subtle particles, but should be understood as the nature of accumulated material subtle particles such as earth. Therefore, since the first subtle particle is merely established by conceptual thought, it does not abide in places or directions, and therefore is not observed in external and internal aggregates of form, while material subtle particles do abide in aggregates of form, and this should be understood. Thus, the first subtle particle is established as the object of only mental consciousness, while some of the material subtle particles are the object of only mental consciousnes

are the objects. Others also become the objects of the sense consciousnesses, such as: the five senses of eye, etc., and the form included in the dharma-sphere, whatever is the subtle particle that exists as a substance, and the subtle particles of the five objects of form, etc., are in that order. Here, if "the subtle particle of the eye" and "the subtle particle of the form," etc., appear, then, is the eye the nature of the accumulation of the subtle particles of the eye? Similarly, is the form also the nature of the accumulation of the subtle particles of the form? Or what will it become? If it is said that there is no difference from those who claim that external objects are real, why wouldn't it become like that? If it is acknowledged that the subtle particles of the eye, etc., are composed of real entities, and that the combined form of the eye, etc., is different from others, then, even if that fault would arise, there is no fault because it is not acknowledged in that way. Why? Because, here, whatever is the substance of the eye's sense faculty is called the subtle particle of the eye's sense faculty, and similarly, whatever is the substance of the form is called the subtle particle of the form. According to the view of those who speak of meaning, it is not acknowledged that the form, etc., are composed of that and that's subtle particles. If it is asked, how can the gross things like the eye, etc., be called subtle particles? The combined forms of outer and inner are the nature of the collection of the subtle particles of the entities of eye and form, etc. Therefore, the eye, etc., in relation to the combinations, are called subtle particles and parts. What is the coarse form that is imputed? That is also of two kinds: arising and transformed from arising. Arising are the four, earth, etc., and transformed from arising are the five senses of eye, etc., and the five objects of form, etc., and the forms included in the dharma-sphere, which will be explained in detail in the treatises. Why are earth, etc., called arising? Because they are the source of arising of the forms of the fruits. Why are they the source of arising of the forms of the fruits? Because they are the causes of doing five kinds of causes, namely, the cause of producing, the cause of supporting, the cause of abiding, the cause of depending, and the cause of increasing. Outer and inner forms are self-
