Is separation and change not a distorted characteristic? Such is the reasoning. Furthermore, it says in that very text: Nirvana is the one truth, etc. Whatever the Buddhas have spoken, at that time, isn't the remainder distorted? Which wise person would not contemplate this? From such scriptural authority, it is refuted that form and other phenomena are truly established. The Mind-Only proponents also say, in the Twenty Verses: When six are joined together at once, the subtle atom becomes six parts. If these six also occupy one direction, the aggregate also becomes like a subtle atom. Such is the reasoning. And in the Sutra of the Ten Bhumis, it says: O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind. And in the Lankavatara Sutra, it says: There is no reality, it is only mind; seeing external objects as real is distorted. The mind, disturbed by habitual tendencies, appears as real and greatly increases. Such scriptural authority refutes that phenomena are truly established. The reason for establishing form and other phenomena as not truly established is to gradually lead sentient beings to the nectar of suchness. Otherwise, if the suchness of the Dharma were taught at the beginning, they would perceive the teachings of the Sugata as a precipice and abandon them. Therefore, first, the phenomena such as form, which are renowned in the world, are established as they appear. After that, the manner in which they arise and cease is also shown. By teaching in this way, when one sees that the contaminated aggregates of existence, such as the body and enjoyments, which must be accomplished through hundreds of difficulties, are like honey on the edge of a razor, insignificant and with great faults, then one becomes a suitable vessel for the true Dharma, and therefore the Dharma of emptiness is taught. As it is said in the Ten Reasoning Treatise: To seek the truth, one must first say that everything exists, one who knows phenomena and is without attachment, afterwards is the separation. Aryadeva also said: Whatever one delights in, that should be examined beforehand; one who has deteriorated is certainly not a vessel for the true Dharma. This is what is said. Thus, some Madhyamikas establish phenomena in accordance with how they are renowned in the world, while those and the scriptures

I think that this classification of form is without contradiction. Some Lokayatas (materialists) agree with the proponents of tenets such as the Sautrantikas. In the Mind-Only school, too, two viewpoints can be seen. For example, the two Lords of Reasoning (Dignaga and Dharmakirti) consider that the proponents of entities, both their own and others' schools, are gradually introduced into the system of Mind-Only. Therefore, in some parts of their treatises, they also make classifications of things as truly established. This is also in accordance with the Sautrantikas. As the venerable Dharmakirti said, "If one enters into the sphere of external objects, I will completely rely on the ladder of the Sautrantikas." This is well known among the wise. Thus, by explaining the classifications of objects and the consciousness that grasps them in a way that is consistent with the Sautrantika view, others argue that self, Ishvara (God), and things with limbs, etc., are all imputed entities and do not exist. However, when objects are understood as the nature of aggregates of subtle particles, and minds are also understood as having the appearance of objects, they wish to explain the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, they say, "However one thinks about things, the more it is separated." What the wise say comes from the power of things themselves. And, "If one analyzes things, then it itself does not exist. Because for them, there is neither the nature of one nor many." etc., thereby preventing the true establishment of external objects and the grasped and the grasper. Thus, how can one refute the objects such as form, etc., and the grasped and the grasper, which are undeniably known from the wise to children? In order to establish conventional truth, the classifications of the grasped and the grasper, etc., are made based on how the grasped and the grasper, etc., appear to those who are deluded by ignorance. As it is said, "There is no difference between the knowable and the knowing, just like the difference in the knowledge of hair, etc. When the grasped and the grasper are distinguished, their nature is completely deluded. Just as they are seen by illusion, these things are established. At that time, there is no need to argue about the nature of the grasped and the grasper." And, "These consciousnesses of the grasped and the grasper, even though they do not exist, how do they appear as the measure and the measurer, and as the result?" Thus it is said.
