It is in order to see the arising of thoughts of other aspects such as Va. Thus, aspects and shapes and so on are merely approximated by the mind. This statement that they do not exist in reality is well established. Alternatively, the form that has become the nature of atoms is both the elements and that which is transformed from the elements. To that, the Vaibhashikas say that the four elements, earth and so on, are causes and effects that arise together mutually, and because they abide in an inseparable manner, in any aggregate in which any of the elements, earth and so on, is manifestly perceived, the other elements are also present by way of their own characteristics. For example, in water, one also perceives the actions of other elements, such as wood floating and lotuses blooming. And in fire, one also perceives the actions of water and earth and so on, such as flames gathering, rising, and moving. Therefore, in the desire realm, in any aggregate without sense faculties that is without sound, the substances of the four elements and the four derived elements are present without distinction. Those that possess the body faculty and other faculties, then by adding the substance of each of those, there are nine or ten substances. And whatever is with sound, then the substance of that should also be added, they say. As it is said in the Treasury [Abhidharmakosha]: "In the desire realm, without faculties and without sound, there are eight substances in the subtle atoms. Those with the body faculty have nine substances. Those with other faculties are said to have ten substances." This is what is said. The Sutrantikas think that whatever element is perceived in anything, that itself does not have its own characteristic, but the other elements abide in the manner of potentiality, but not by their own characteristic, because the sutra says that this heap of wood has various constituents. Furthermore, what is the distinction between the elements and that which is transformed from the elements? By what means are earth and so on called elements, and form and so on called that which is transformed from the elements? Whatever has become the source of all arising of colored fruits is called an element. For example, like the source of gold and so on. Whatever depends in every way on the elements for all arising, abiding, and changing is called that which is transformed from the elements.
