Therefore, by virtue of its own nature, for the aggregates of consciousness, atoms, etc., to say that they are invisible, all of these cannot be established. Thus it is said. If even in the state of accumulation, it does not exceed the nature of the ultimate atom, then like the atom, at that time also there should be no parts such as directions and shapes. If you think so, it is not so. Because at the time of accumulation, other effects other than color will arise, such as other things with shapes such as length and shortness. The directions such as east are also other things, because for the atoms of color, etc., through the difference of arrangement, the directions such as east are established by consciousness. So on and so forth. The Sutra masters think that when atoms, etc., gather to become the object of perception, since the faults mentioned before will arise, they are neither in contact with each other nor have intervals. Because if the space for other atoms to enter is found, then the vase, etc., will not be able to block water, etc., and it will become a fault. Therefore, in order not to find the space for other atoms to enter, there is no interval. If they are all in contact, they will not grow larger and larger. If one direction is in contact, the atom will become divided. Therefore, although atoms, etc., are not in contact, they have no interval and are said to be in a closely connected state. Even in the state of accumulation, there is no departure from the nature of the ultimate atom, but the reason why the name of having parts such as directions and shapes is used is because color is the difference in the arrangement of atoms, and directions such as east and shapes such as length and shortness are only falsely established through conceptualization, and the corresponding names are established, but they are not truly existent. Why are directions and shapes, etc., not truly existent? If they are truly existent, then do they exist on each atom, or do they exist on atoms that are not gathered? The first case is unreasonable. Because whatever is the essence of a single thing should not have parts such as directions and shapes. For example, like a single moment of consciousness, each ultimate atom is also the nature of a single thing. This is called the contradiction of the pervader. Furthermore, if atoms, etc., have parts such as directions, they should not be the nature of atoms, which has also been said. Two directions

Aggregation is also not real, because even in the state of aggregation, there is no transformation from the nature of the previous partless atom. If, just as individual entities are not apprehended by sense consciousness, so too aggregates will not be apprehended by sense consciousness, is that so? It is not so. Because even a single atom that, when without companions, cannot even generate self-grasping consciousness, later, according to the circumstances, when it meets with many atoms of the same kind as itself and adheres to each other in a suitable place, it is able to generate self-grasping consciousness by means of the preceding similar cause of its own kind and the condition of the preceding moment of the atom that is simultaneous with itself. Therefore, at the time of aggregation, the atoms are apprehended by sense consciousness, but not when they are without companions. What contradiction is there in saying this? If it is said that when without companions, the atoms do not possess aspects such as direction and shape, but when accompanied by similar entities, they arise possessing aspects such as direction and shape by means of the preceding similar cause of their own kind and simultaneous conditions, what contradiction is there? That is not the same. Because, even when atoms exist without companions, if they encounter conditions of the same kind as themselves, they still possess the nature of being able to generate self-grasping consciousness, so when they encounter such conditions, they are able to generate self-grasping consciousness. However, it is not reasonable for atoms, whether in a state of being without companions or with companions, to generate atoms possessing aspects such as direction and shape, no matter what conditions they encounter. Because, whatever possesses aspects such as direction and shape is not the ultimate smallness of form. And whatever is not the ultimate smallness of form cannot be considered an atom. If atoms, in the state of aggregation, arise possessing aspects such as direction, they will lose the nature of atoms. This is also unreasonable. Because no phenomenon, in any state, abandons its own nature, because nature cannot be transformed by conditions. If it is said that the nature of the ultimate atom does not generate atoms possessing aspects such as direction, but other forms possessing direction, etc., arise from them as a cause, is that so? This requires examination.

So, is the colored form that possesses aspects such as directions a single coarse entity, or is it the nature of many subtle particles? According to the first view, whatever possesses aspects such as directions and shapes is not four (sides). For example, like a mansion and a row of many birds that are wonderful and pleasing, the colored form that is manifestly accepted is also admitted to possess aspects such as directions and shapes. This is the fallacy of the contradictory pervader being established. According to the second view, neither individual particles nor aggregates of them possess aspects such as directions and shapes, as has been previously stated. If it is said that shapes such as long and short are merely imputed, then colors such as blue and yellow would also become entirely conceptual, because the perception of color arises only in the state of aggregation, and not in the subtle particles. If you say this, it is not correct. Because particles of color such as blue and yellow do not have the power to generate awareness when they are without others, so it is only that the perception of blue and yellow does not arise. But it is not the case that blue and yellow do not exist in their respective natures at that time. Otherwise, when they encounter other particles of the same type, how would they manifest as the nature of colors such as blue and yellow? It has already been stated that it is impossible for a colored part to give rise to another entity. Just as particles of colors such as blue and yellow are established in reality, particles of shapes such as long and short are not established in reality. For example, whatever color is composed of particles of blue and so on, even if one sees many different colors in it, it is never possible to abandon the perception of its color. Similarly, if one believes that a long object composed of long particles, when it encounters another long object, one should not abandon the perception of its length. But this is not the case, because a long row of a hundred wonderful and pleasing birds gives rise to the perception of "long" in relation to a short row of birds, but when one sees a row of a thousand birds and so on, the perception of "short" arises. Similarly, one should understand that directions such as east do not have a nature composed of particles. Because for a single colored object, the perception of "east" arises in some places, while in other places it
