Even that which is the ālaya-vijñāna is the nature of the realm of consciousness. 3. The nature of the āyatana (སྐྱེ་མཆེད་, sense-sphere) should be viewed as being the same as the dhātu (ཁམས་, element), and not otherwise. The eye-dhātu, etc., themselves, from the point of view of being the door that produces near-use, are established as the eye-āyatana, etc. How should that be connected appropriately? Like this, whichever eye is able to see forms, and seeing and accumulating its seeds and ripening, that which is said to be the ālaya-vijñāna, that is the nature of the eye-āyatana, etc., connect it like that. According to the commentary that explains "whichever eye is able to see forms," if the nature of the dhātu and āyatana contradict each other, then that is not seen as reasonable. Thus, in order to easily understand the respective essences of the three dharmas, their natures are shown, and then below that, in order to specifically understand the respective essences of the bases, divisions, and distinctions that possess that nature, their establishments are explained. That is also divided into three types: skandha, dhātu, and āyatana. Among those, first the five skandhas are established, and in order to show and introduce the rūpa-skandha, it is said, "What is the establishment of the rūpa-skandha?" etc. Some who have entered into practice say this, as it is said in the Daśabhūmika Sūtra: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind." And, "The meaning is as stated in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra: there is no external reality, it is only mind; seeing external objects is a mistake." Because it is said like that, and also here it is said, "In order to make people understand that form does not exist as a substance that is completely established." Isn't that how it will be explained? If you doubt why you should bother to establish external objects such as form, then it is true that such thoughts arise in those who have wisdom, but in the Sugata's sūtra, if the differences are shown in how form, etc., are spoken of, and how the followers of the tenets of the tirthikas explain it, then other similar needs will naturally disappear, therefore the general.
