Therefore, the fault remains with those unreasonable claims, such as considering (mind and mental factors) to be a single entity like a pillar. The mind that merely completely cuts off meaning, as well as mental anguish, etc., are also named as changing into other states that completely cut off the differences of meaning. Because in a single instant, no difference in the efficient cause is observed that would make it dependent on other states. If someone says that only mind exists as a substance, then this also contradicts the scriptures, which say that a mind defiled by desire, a mind defiled by hatred and ignorance, will not be liberated. If the mind is naturally luminous, and mental factors such as desire are other things, then desire, etc., should be able to completely defile the mind. Otherwise, if there is no dharma that completely defiles it, and no dharma that is completely defiled arise simultaneously, then what would bind what? Because the act of binding oneself is contradictory. Furthermore, this also contradicts the statement in the scriptures that "simultaneously born feeling, perception, and mind (sems dpa', likely a mistake for "intention") and these dharmas are mixed, not unmixed." If there is no simultaneous birth, then the term "mixed" is not valid. If there is no difference, then the term "simultaneous" is also unreasonable. Therefore, mind and mental factors should be distinct entities. Similarity in accordance refers to: like a virtuous mind and virtuous mental factors, the two with the same essence are in accordance; but not like a virtuous mind and non-virtuous mental factors, etc., the two with different essences. Like the present (current) mind and the present mental factors, the two with the same time are in accordance; but not like the past mind and the future mental factors, the two with different times. Like the mind that operates in the desire realm and its associated mental factors, the two belonging to the same realm and ground are in accordance; but not like the mind of the desire realm and the mental factors of the first dhyana, the two not belonging to the same realm and ground. The classification of accordance is: the accordance that is universally present at all times refers to: the five ever-present mental factors such as feeling, etc., and the various consciousnesses.
