That is so. Food is both coarse and subtle. For example, the food of the desire realm gods and those in fierce states is subtle. These foods benefit the senses and their support by dissolving into the body, and do not produce external dirt and impurities. Other than that, food is coarse. During digestion, the essence nourishes the senses and their support, while the dregs become external dirt and impurities. Furthermore, the food of the intermediate state (bardo) and others is also subtle. Tactile food is the touch that fully enjoys desirable objects, benefiting the body with its senses, and is therefore called food born from objects. Is touch food? Is food touch? The answer is that there are four possibilities. Touch is, but is not food, referring to the touch that experiences suffering and discomfort, because it does not benefit the senses and their support. There is food that is not touch, such as other foods like coarse food. There are those that are both, such as realms and mind, which do not benefit the senses and their support. For the food of thought and consciousness, the four possibilities should also be applied accordingly. The food of intention is the thought that moves consciousness towards desirable objects, and it benefits the senses and their support through the power of hope related to desired objects, and is therefore called food born from hope. The food of consciousness is the alaya consciousness, because its power causes the body to be formed and maintained; if it is lost, the body will decay, etc. Therefore, it is also called food born from grasping. The three aggregates are form, formation, and consciousness. The eleven realms are the seven consciousness realms, as well as the realms of smell, taste, touch, and dharma. The five sources are the sources of smell, taste, touch, dharma, and mind.

These are the dharmas. One aspect of those dharmas is that which is encompassed by the four foods. When one knows that the food that sustains is merely dharma, then one knows that the place of sustenance is also merely dharma, and thus abandons the attachment to the self as the place of food. Furthermore, those four kinds of food are, in summary, established in four ways: for example, the food that sustains an impure body is that of ordinary beings who engage in desire, because they possess all bonds. The food that sustains both impure and pure bodies is that of those who are in training and those who engage in the form and formless realms, because they have remnants of bonds remaining. The food that sustains a pure body is that of the Arhats, because they are completely liberated from all bonds. By universally showing the place of food, it is also regarded as food, and that is of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who possess great power, because they universally show the place of food in the way it appears to others. One aspect of all conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, except for Nirvana, is that which has something above it. Because there is another dharma that is superior to those. One aspect of the realm of dharma and the sources of birth is the abandonment of Nirvana. Whatever has something above it must necessarily be transcended, therefore it is an inferior substance, and if one knows that it is merely dharma, one abandons attachment to the self there. One aspect of the unconditioned, Nirvana, is that which has nothing above it. That is the nature of suchness, which is completely pure, therefore there is no other dharma that is superior to it. Whatever is without superior must be diligently transcended, therefore it is called a superior substance, and if one knows that it is merely dharma, one abandons attachment to the self there. Third, showing the immeasurable distinctions, as explained before, in that way, this way of explaining the aggregates, elements, and sources through the three aspects of characteristics, number of entities, and purpose is immeasurable, because the sphere of each courage and correct distinction is limitless. Second, dividing into three, such as the completely imputed, again, summarizing the distinctions such as truly existent, there are three types.
