If. Besides that, eyes and so on, and happiness and suffering, etc., are named 'Vipāka' because they arise from Vipāka. There are four kinds of food: Kabalīkāra-āhāra (physical food), sparśa-āhāra (sense-impression food), manaḥ-sañcetanā-āhāra (volitional food), and vijñāna-āhāra (consciousness food). Among them, Kabalīkāra-āhāra is coarse, and it exists in all five realms of desire realm, and also in some temporary sentient hells, but not in the great sentient hells. Others say that even in those hells, there are burning iron hammers and copper juice, etc., which can appease hunger, so they are regarded as food. The meaning of food is to satisfy the senses, so I think that is unreasonable. The remaining foods can be observed in all three realms. When conditioned phenomena abide by seven causes, it is like this: for the time being, the first arising alone is the cause of the abiding of conditioned phenomena, because those that arise abide, and those that do not arise do not abide. The life force and food are also causes. The magical powers of those who have mastery over the mind are also causes, because they extend the conditioned phenomena of life and abide for more than kalpas of kalpas. The collection of causes and conditions is also a cause, because as long as causes and conditions are not separated, the continuity of the existence of virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified dharmas will not be interrupted. The projection of previous karma is also a cause of the abiding of conditioned phenomena accomplished by virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified dharmas, just as external objects are produced by common and uncommon karma. The absence of interruption is also the seventh cause of the abiding of conditioned phenomena. Those that arise from the cause of the conditioned phenomena themselves, and have not encountered the power of causes and conditions, will continue to exist if they do not encounter obstacles of adverse conditions, otherwise they will perish. Since there are seven causes for the abiding of conditioned phenomena, why did the Blessed One only say that food is the cause of the abiding of sentient beings? Although conditioned phenomena are also made to abide by other factors such as arising,

However, these four foods sustain the aggregates because they have many different gateways. Moreover, this sustenance derived from food is easily grasped, easily entered, and easily understood even by children and young people, whereas others are not. Furthermore, food causes the senses and the great elements to increase what has not increased, and it also restores those afflicted by disease to health, whereas others do not. Moreover, even long-lived beings will die untimely if they do not find food. Thus, beings are sustained by four foods. This path, which is mindfulness and so forth, is easy to enter into meditation. Therefore, it is because of these five reasons that it is said that beings are sustained only by food. Among them, coarse food is called that because when the three sense-spheres of smell, taste, and touch are transformed into what can be digested, the senses and their supports increase and develop. Therefore, digestion is also called that which is produced from digestion. Why is coarse food summarized by three sense-spheres? Because, if smell, taste, and touch are well digested, they cause the senses and their supports to increase; if they are poorly digested, they cause them to diminish. But form and so forth are not digested even for the sake of increase, nor are they digested even for the sake of decrease. Therefore, only the three sense-spheres of smell, taste, and touch are coarse food. These three sense-spheres, namely smell, taste, and touch, are also coarse because the senses of nose, tongue, and body chew and enjoy them piece by piece. After they are enjoyed, when they are digested, they cause the colored senses and their supports to increase and develop, so they are called food. Therefore, coarse foods are to be called food only when they are digested, but not when they are enjoyed. Because when they are enjoyed, they do not cause the senses to increase, but only when they are digested do they perform that function. When one eats something, whatever makes the senses satisfied because it is pleasing is not what makes the senses satisfied through coarse food, but at that time, the object
