Son, it is said thus. Among these, that which has power over the support is: the wind mandala and so on have power over the support of the water mandala and so on, therefore it is the lord cause. Similarly, the vessel world is for sentient beings. The elements are for those transformed from the elements. The faculties are for the consciousnesses. And so forth, one should understand accordingly. That which has power over projecting is: the common karma of sentient beings has power over projecting the vessel world, therefore it is the lord cause. Similarly, karma with outflows has power over projecting the ripening, and so forth, should be combined accordingly. That which has power over simultaneous arising is: mind has power over the simultaneous arising of mental factors and so on, therefore it is the lord cause. Similarly, attention is for the mind. Contact is for feeling, and so on. That which has power over the object is: the six faculties, eye and so on, because the object is established by the power of the faculties. That which has power over birth is: the male and female faculties, because by their power, birth in the womb is accomplished. That which has power over abiding is: the life faculty, because by its power, similar types are made to abide. That which has power over experiencing the fruit is: the five feeling faculties, because by their power, one experiences the ripening of virtue and non-virtue, such as coolness and heat. That which has power over worldly purification is: the five, faith and so on, because by their power, one becomes free from desire from the desire realm and so on. That which has power over transmundane purification is: the unknown to be known, the known, and the all-knowing, the three, because by their power, having abandoned all that is to be abandoned by seeing and meditation, one enjoys the bliss of liberation. The four causes have been extensively explained. Second, showing the sameness of support and the nature of that sameness: Among these, the meaning of support and sameness is this: the five faculties, eye and so on, are inseparable from their own consciousness, and being similar to that consciousness, they constantly arise as enjoying their own objects.

What is 'similar to the support'? It is the consciousness that relies on itself, and is similar in enjoying objects, hence it is called 'similar to the support'. What is similar to that? It is any sense faculty such as the eye in states like sleep and fainting, which, although separated from the consciousness that relies on itself, has a continuous stream of similar types arising that are similar to the 'support-similar' faculty itself. Although this is not similar to the consciousness as the support, it is called similar to that because it is similar to the 'support-similar' faculty itself in terms of the nature of the faculty. Why are 'support-similar' and 'similar to that' established only on the sense faculties and not on the objects? Because whatever is similar to the consciousnesses that are the support has 'support-similarity'; and whatever has 'support-similarity' has 'similarity to that'. But objects such as forms and sounds are not similar to the consciousness that is the support, because they do not have the power to enjoy objects. Therefore, there is no 'support-similarity', and if there is no 'support-similarity', then there is no 'similarity to that', because the latter is established in dependence on the former. If it is said that the function of the sense faculties is to act as the support for their own consciousness, therefore, the sense faculty that performs its own function is called the 'support-similar' faculty, and the one that does not perform its function is called the sense faculty 'similar to that' because it has the same nature as the one that performs its function. Similarly, the function of the objects is to act as the object of their own consciousness, therefore, the object that performs its own function is 'support-similar', and the object that does not perform its function is called 'similar to that', is that acceptable? This is not reasonable, because it loses the meaning of the term 'support-similar'. Moreover, the sense faculties do not have the function of generating other consciousnesses, so even if it could be勉强成立 to establish 'support-similar' and 'similar to that' through the way of performing and not performing their own functions, objects such as forms and sounds do not have this certainty, because objects are to be commonly enjoyed by the consciousnesses of all individuals. When certain forms become the object of Devadatta's eye consciousness, other individuals such as Yajnadatta
