Therefore, regarding focusing on the uncontaminated, etc., the definitive establishment of the conditions for objects is as follows: Thus, through characteristics, and detailed divisions, establishments, complete understanding, and abandonment, one should also discern objects. In terms of characteristics, how is it? The mind and mental factors that appear in any object become the cause of arising, and after they arise, they manifestly cling to that object, apply names, and each becomes its own cognition, which is the characteristic of an object. In terms of detailed divisions, how is it? The summary is: Non-existent, existent, objectless, with object. Correct, proper, the opposite of both, other. Similar and dissimilar, various, one. Separate, aggregate, ultimate, subtle afflictions. Sutra words and meanings, small, large. With characteristics, without characteristics, from these two. Mastery, momentary, following. Divided into twenty-nine objects. That is to say, a non-existent object is like this: the mind and mental factors that are inverted, past, future, dreams, images, illusions, and so on. An existent object is an object other than that. An objectless object is form, non-associated formations, and the unconditioned. An object with an object is the mind and mental factors. A truly correct object is virtue. A false object is affliction. An object that is neither of these is undeclared and neutral. A proper object is the object of virtuous minds and mental factors. An improper object is the object of afflictions. An object that is neither of these is the object of undeclared and neutral minds and mental factors. Similar objects are virtuous phenomena focusing on virtuous phenomena, and self-ground phenomena focusing on self-ground phenomena, contaminated phenomena focusing on contaminated phenomena, and uncontaminated phenomena focusing on uncontaminated phenomena. Dissimilar objects are non-virtuous phenomena focusing on virtuous phenomena, and self-ground phenomena focusing on other-ground phenomena, and so on. Various objects are minds and mental factors together with realization.

These are the objects of those associated with conduct. The sole object is the object of minds and mental factors that neither conceptualize nor act. The separated object is the object of those minds and mental factors associated with the state of non-perception, and those that focus on space and the sphere of infinite consciousness. The condensed subtle object is the object of the spheres of nothingness. The ultimate object is the object of those in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. The object of affliction is called an object because it is what is focused upon. The object of the Dharma present in the words of the Sutras is the collection of names, phrases, and letters of all the treatises. The object of meaning is whatever expressible meaning depends on it. The small object is the Hearer Vehicle. The vast object is the Great Vehicle. The object with signs is the sign of calm abiding and special insight, and equanimity. The object without signs is Nirvana and the peak of existence. The object of that alone is the object of suchness and the sixteen aspects of truth. The object of abiding is the object of those minds and mental factors associated with the cessation attainment. The object of mastery is the object of the special qualities from liberation and so forth up to omniscience. The momentary object is the life of the non-learners. The following object is the object of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. How is it established? The causes of objects mentioned above are established only nominally, not truly, because the object is not fully established. Why is the object not fully established? It should be observed that the object is not fully established in four ways: namely, in this way, consciousness acts as a discordant cause, and consciousness without an object is an object, and without effort it does not become inverted, and because it is followed by three kinds of knowledge. Among these, first is the consciousness of
