The cause of confusion is this. As it is said: "Pretas, animals, humans, and, gods, in their respective categories, because one thing appears differently to the mind, they desire but do not achieve the meaning." This is what is said. The meaning is this: These things that appear as external objects, such as rivers, are not established as they appear. In the realms of pretas, animals, humans, and gods, the same thing appears as pus and blood to some because of their respective karmas. It is also not possible to determine that the consciousnesses of these sentient beings are "this is not mistaken, and those are mistaken," because in all conventions, they are not deceived by their respective appearances. Therefore, things that appear as real objects, such as rivers, are merely appearances of the mind, and there is nothing established apart from the mind. If there is no object of focus, then the consciousness that appears there should not arise. Answer: Even without an object of focus, it is observed that consciousness arises. Therefore, it is said: "Likewise, the past and dreams, and the two aspects of the formed, because there is nothing, because there is no object of focus, therefore, that is a suitable object of focus." This is what is said. The two aspects of the formed refer to external objects such as water moons, and internal objects such as skeletons that appear in the mind of a yogi. The rest is easy to understand. If all things were truly established as they appear, then all beings should see reality and be liberated without effort. Or, no matter how much effort is made, liberation from grasping and the grasped cannot be attained, because the appearance of duality is not inverted, and the non-dual conceptual thought becomes inverted. Therefore, it is declared: "If meaning is established as real meaning, non-conceptual wisdom will not arise, and without that, Buddhahood cannot be attained, it is not reasonable to obtain the fruit of Buddhahood." This is what is said. Furthermore, because it accords with the three types of consciousness, things are not established. The three types of consciousness are: sense consciousness, higher seeing consciousness, and non-conceptual consciousness. Regarding the first, sense consciousness, it is said: Bodhi

It is said: Bodhisattvas who have attained mastery, and yogis as well, through the power of faith, objects such as earth appear as they wish. That is to say, those who wish to make earth and other things appear as real are yogis who have attained mastery and bodhisattvas. According to their faith, gold and the sky and so on also change accordingly. Therefore, earth and other things are not established as being only that nature. This is the meaning. Considering the second, it is said: For those who can well distinguish in this, who are wise and have attained peace, when they contemplate all dharmas, the meaning does not appear as such. Thus, it means that for those sons of the Buddhas who are well-versed in tranquility and insight, when they contemplate all internal and external dharmas as mere expressions of mind, they appear only as such, but no meaning whatsoever appears. Considering the third, it is said: When the non-conceptual wisdom roams, because all meanings do not appear, one should understand that meaning is non-existent. Because of its absence, there is no consciousness. Therefore, the meaning is this: If meaning were truly established, it would also appear to the non-conceptual wisdom, because it is the object of what is as it is. However, meaning does not appear to the non-conceptual wisdom either, because it is distinguished by non-dual wisdom. Thus, meaning is not established, and therefore the clinging associated with it is also not truly established. One should understand it in this way. These verses come from the *Compendium of the Great Vehicle*. How is it that one knows completely? It is because one knows the nature, the various distinctions, and the establishments as they truly are. How is it that one abandons? It is the transformation of the basis of the Hearers and the Great Vehicle. Among them, the transformation of the basis of the Hearers is liberation from the bonds of the objects of the aggregates, elements, and sense sources, but it is not the attainment of mastery. The transformation of the basis of the Great Vehicle is both liberation from the bonds of objects and the attainment of mastery over objects as one desires. The condition of the object has been explained. After that, the proponent establishes the condition of the lord, saying, "How does the lord...
