It is the consciousness that arises due to the cause of actions (karma), which is called "consciousness." The second is, what causes the name and form to grow in the mother's womb? That is the consciousness of "name and form" that arises due to consciousness. Name and form refer to the aggregate of name-basis together with sticky things, etc., and the body with senses. The six sense sources refer to its growth, the sense organs such as the eyes, which become the gateway for the arising of eye consciousness, etc. Contact and feeling have already been explained. Craving is the attachment that arises from accepting or rejecting pleasant and unpleasant feelings, which are desire-craving, existence-craving, and non-existence-craving. The first refers to the attachment of those who act in the desire realm, because they are particularly attached to the merits of desire. The second refers to the attachment of the two upper realms, because they are attached only to the aggregates of grasping within existence. The third refers to the desire to cut off the continuity of the aggregates of the three realms. Alternatively, wanting to obtain happiness is desire-craving, and wanting to abandon suffering is non-existence-craving. The Lord of Reasoning believes that universally craving for contaminated things such as aggregates is existence-craving. Grasping refers to the desire to obtain in the future, and the intention and attachment of the nature of wanting not to be separated from the present. These transform into four types, such as view-grasping, due to the difference in objects. If you ask, what is the difference between craving and grasping? Both are the nature of attachment, but craving is a slight attachment, while grasping is a strong attachment. Moreover, craving is attachment to the objects and aggregates, etc., of the present moment, while grasping is the attachment of particularly craving for the aggregates at the time of death. The first is the difference between grasping itself, such as view-grasping, and craving. The second is the difference between grasping and craving as a branch of dependent origination. Existence refers to the alaya consciousness imprinted by the habits of previous actions.

The consciousness that has not been abandoned is nourished by the clinging that is characterized by attachment to the future aggregates that occur at the time of death. Thus, the karmic imprints that have the power and strength to turn towards rebirth become the cause of birth, which is existence, and consciousness is the cause of name and form. However, these cannot be said to be either the same or different. Birth is the state in which such consciousness enters the womb and the faculties such as the eye gradually appear, as has already been explained. Aging and death are the states of change in age and change in life, and these have also been explained earlier. Aging and death are made into one limb because there is death after the exhaustion of life without aging. In which realms are these limbs present? All are present in the desire realm, and one aspect of each is present in the two upper realms, because even in those realms there is aging characterized by the decay of formations. Why is ignorance taught as the first limb? Because afflictions arise from ignorance, and actions also arise from afflictions, and birth arises from actions, therefore ignorance is the root of all existence, and therefore it is taught as the first limb. If there is another cause that produces ignorance, then ignorance would not be the first limb, and if it has no cause, then samsara would be beginningless, and it would be admitting the position of those who speak of no cause, and thus it would not be speaking of dependent origination. If it is said, by what power does ignorance become completely afflicted? If it is said that there is another cause of ignorance, or that it arises without a cause, then it is true that it would be the same fault as mentioned earlier. But here it does not arise in that way, ignorance arises from the power of the imprints of ignorance that have been continuous from beginningless time, therefore this is not arisen without a cause, nor is it arisen from another cause. If that is the case, then formations and so on also arise from the cause of their respective seeds, therefore, it is meaningless to contemplate other conditions such as ignorance, it is not so.
