Because it is acknowledged that it is made by a tiny author, and that the internal sense bases, etc., also arise from the cause of previous actions, etc. Because it is acknowledged that the twelve links, such as actions, arise from the condition of ignorance. Although there is no ignorance regarding the second dependent arising, nevertheless, the Vaibhashikas, for example, establish all twelve links as the stages of the five skandhas of the three times, and there are also incorrect understandings, so it is not that they understand it without error in all aspects. Among these, knowing the first dependent arising eliminates the obscuration of knowledge. From understanding the nature of the second, one eliminates the obscuration of afflictions, because these two types of dependent arising are distinguished in sequence by the selflessness of phenomena and persons. Therefore, here, the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas emphasize the second dependent arising, while the Mahayanists emphasize the first. Among them, there are two types of Mahayanists: those who assert only consciousness, and those who assert no essence. For those who assert only consciousness, the manner in which all phenomena arise from the all-seed, fully ripened consciousness, which is the first dependent arising, has already been explained in detail. The second dependent arising, the progression of the twelve links such as ignorance, will be explained in detail in the text itself. The common characteristics of both, such as arising from an unwavering cause, etc., have also been explained. According to the view of those who assert no essence, even those who assert only consciousness have fallen into a reversed understanding of the meaning of dependent arising, because they abandon the conventional causes and conditions of how things appear and acknowledge that they arise from the cause of the very non-apparent alaya-consciousness. According to their view, the meaning of dependent arising is that, having abandoned arising from self, other, both, and no cause, the cause and effect emanated by the Brahma of conceptual thought, like smoke arising from a magical fire, is dependent arising.

This can be established as a nominal designation, as it is said in the "Upper Treatise on the Middle Way": Suffering is caused by oneself, or caused by others, or caused by both. This is the speculation of the causeless thinkers. You say it arises from conditions. As it is said. This very profound dependent arising, I will separately explain to those who are vessels and seek meaning. Here, I will not elaborate because it is not the time. According to the Mind-Only school, the way of dependent arising of those who speak of no self-nature is not correct, because they slander that the results arise from causes and conditions that are different from themselves. This is what they think. Second, the classification of the limbs is: the twelve limbs, and so on. Among them, ignorance is: that by the power of which sentient beings are deluded about the faults of samsara and the benefits of nirvana, and is the opposite of wisdom and knowledge. Then, is it to be abandoned by seeing, or is it to be abandoned by meditation? On this, in the "Explanation of Hidden Meanings" it says: Because it is what projects into rebirth, and in the "Commentary on the Sutra of Dependent Arising" it says: Seeing the truth, there is no projection. Therefore, it is said that ignorance is to be abandoned by seeing, but I do not see it well. Because if one thinks like this, then all the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing in the desire realm are only unwholesome, and therefore, the merit accumulated in the desire realm and the unwavering formations will become unwholesome, because they arise from ignorance to be abandoned by seeing in the desire realm as a condition, just like non-meritorious actions. Therefore, the ignorance in this case is the general cause of all formations, so it is to be abandoned by meditation. That is to say, it refers to the ignorance that arises in association with the afflicted mind, not to those that arise in association with the consciousness, because the latter does not follow merit and unwavering formations. If it is said that the afflicted mind and its retinue, because they look inward, cannot initiate wholesome or unwholesome actions, then...
