When something is to be abandoned, there are three types of pervasive defilements. Among these, the pervasively defiling defilements are: those pervasively conceived by factions possessing defilements, arising from the power of evil spiritual friends teaching wrong Dharma. The view of the aggregates that conceives of a self other than the aggregates, and the view that grasps that self as permanent or impermanent, and the doubt that hesitates about the four truths, and the place and seed from which those views and doubts arise, and the mind that possesses the same place as that with which it associates, and other mental phenomena arising from the mind. The defilements that wrongly engage in those views are: the view of holding those views as supreme and primary, the clinging to views, and the clinging to ethics and discipline that follows those views, holding ethics and discipline as pure liberation, and the wrong view that slanders the four truths and imputes other paths to liberation and the path to liberation, and attachment to those previous views, and anger towards those that disagree with them, and the near defilements such as anger that agrees with them, and the ignorance that possesses the same characteristics as them. The pervasively defiling actions are: any actions of body and speech that are instigated by those views together with their associates. The pervasively defiling births are: the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are included in the maturation of the lower realms. These are abandoned merely by seeing the nature of truth, because all are rooted in ignorance of the aspect of truth, and some are rooted in the pervasive conception of self-view. Therefore, these are to be abandoned by seeing. One aspect of all is what is abandoned by meditation and the abandonment of the uncontaminated. For those purifications that are to be abandoned by seeing, as described above, they possess the perfection of seeing the reality of truth, and this is only a reasonable understanding of the impermanence of the aggregates as mere phenomena. If the self were permanent, it would be unreasonable for what previously possessed what was to be abandoned to later, after seeing the truth, be separated from what was to be abandoned. Therefore, by realizing the reality of the self's truth, one abandons the manifest clinging to seeing or perfect views. What is to be abandoned by meditation is seeing
