Among the first and second (parts), for the time being, the teaching is presented through three meanings: Among these, essence, connection, and origination are the divisions of things, because all virtuous characteristics are limited to just this. The rest are merely detailed distinctions of the common aspects of real and imputed, for the sake of generating wisdom in those to be tamed. The ten realms are the seven realms of consciousness, and the realms of form, sound, and phenomena. The four sources of arising are the sources of arising of mind, phenomena, form, and sound. Among these, there exist three possibilities: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. Therefore, non-virtuous and neutral are abandoned. When one knows that the result is merely the virtuous dharma that grants desires, one abandons the manifest clinging to the self and dharma as possessing virtue. Secondly, the detailed explanation of characteristics: The eleven mental factors from faith to non-harming, which are those with the characteristics previously described, are virtuous by nature, like good medicine, because they are naturally pure and born as essence. The mind and mental factors that are concordant with them are virtuous by connection, like a drink mixed with good medicine, because they are born as a pure nature through the power of companionship. The particular habitual tendencies of the virtuousness of essence and connection are called subsequently connected virtuousness, like the seed of medicine, because they possess the potential of pure dharma. This is merely imputed as virtuous, but is not characterized as such, because the reason has already been explained earlier in the context of pointing out the seeds of the all-ground consciousness. The actions of body and speech, whether indicative or non-indicative, that are originated by faith and so forth together with their concomitants, are the virtuousness of origination, like the flowers and fruits of a medicinal tree, because they are born as a pure essence from the power of origination. Suchness is the virtuousness of ultimate truth, because the noble ones with the eye of non-perverted wisdom see this as an essence that is without fault and pure. This is also like applying the term "happiness" to the absence of illness, merely the absence of non-virtue

It is called that way, but not because it produces the desired result. Because it exists without difference for all things, and because it will never not exist, all beings would always enjoy happiness. Therefore, those who say, "The Tathāgatagarbha is the root of virtue to be dedicated to the cause of enlightenment" are talking nonsense without logical or reasonable conduct, because they admit views that contradict scripture and reason. This has already been refuted in detail in the "Differentiation of the Three Vows," so I will not elaborate here, because what is the use of applying acupuncture to a dead person again? Therefore, Suchness is only approximated as virtue because it is similar to faith and other faultless things, but it is not actually so. It has been said before that Nirvana transcends the scope of all terms such as virtue. The virtue obtained by birth is that, relying on the repeated habituation of good dharmas such as faith in previous lives, in this life, the nature of that virtue, that is, the fully ripened result that is in accordance with it, manifests as a body that is suitable as a basis for accomplishing virtue. By the power of this, the intention to naturally or spontaneously act on those very faiths, etc., is universally present, but not by the power of separately examining things such as relying on holy people. It means that it arises by the power of holding that body of complete maturation, and it is not the meaning of being accomplished by effort. The virtue arising from application is relying on a holy person, a virtuous friend, listening to the holy Dharma, including scriptures and commentaries, properly attending to the nature of knowable things, such as impermanence, and practicing the Dharma that is in accordance with Nirvana, or repeatedly cultivating faith, etc., based on the three trainings. The virtue of intention is to place the manifested body of the Tathagata, or the eight great stupas, etc., or clay sculptures, clay statues, etc., or paintings, etc., or Buddha images drawn in the form of paintings, or Buddhist scriptures, Dharma books, etc., in front of you.
