Now, one aspect is abandoning the past, future, and unconditioned dharmas. If one understands that the present only exists for a moment, gaining its nature from causes, then one should abandon clinging to the notion that the present self will enter future lives. Regarding these three times, some internal and external schools of thought believe that, like the present, the past and future also exist as substances. Otherwise, the past and future would not enter the mind, and past actions would not produce results. Thus, through scripture and reasoning, they establish that the past and future are substantial. To this, it should be said that for those externalists who believe that things are permanent, there is nothing unreasonable in their view. However, for those who believe that conditioned things are impermanent, yet say that the past and future exist as substances, it is very unreasonable. This is because things are called impermanent, which is distinguished by arising and ceasing. According to that view, arising and ceasing are impossible. For example, if the future exists as a substance, then it cannot arise from causes and conditions, because a substance does not need the action of causes and conditions. If it is said that the action of causes and conditions is to lead the future from the future state to the present, then does this mean that a new substance is produced, or that the thing is made manifest? If it is the former, then it cannot be said that the future substance is led to the present, because the substance of that thing produced by causes and conditions is newly produced, and it cannot be said that the future substance is led to the present. Because the substance of that thing produced by causes and conditions is newly produced, and it does not exist in the future state. If it is the latter, then is the manifestation itself the same as or different from the substance? If it is the former, then the substance in the future state will also be manifest like the manifestation, or like the manifestation, the substance will also be newly produced by causes and conditions, and it cannot be said that it comes from the future state. If it is the latter, the action of causes and conditions is to make the future substance manifest in the nature of the present.

will not change, because what is manifested by causes and conditions is different from the substance. If other things manifest, then other things should not be made to manifest, because this would lead to extremes. If manifestation is the substance itself, and cannot be expressed in any other way, this is also unreasonable, because no other substance apart from manifestation is seen. Because the properties of substances do not go beyond the categories of self and other. Furthermore, do future and present things have different own-natures? If they do not have different own-natures, then present things are also unborn like future things, or future things also become manifest like present things. If they are different, then if the substance and own-nature of the future state are the same, then in the present state, when the future substance manifests, the future own-nature should also manifest. In this way, it is unreasonable for one substance to manifest the own-nature of two times simultaneously. If the substance and own-nature are different, then it cannot be called own-nature, just like a cow and a horse. Therefore, if the future exists in substance, then the statement that things are newly produced from causes and conditions is unreasonable. If the past exists in substance, then destruction is unreasonable. If the substance of the present object remains without being destroyed, then the statement that the past exists in substance would be reasonable. If the present substance is destroyed and leaves no trace, then from where does the substance called the past come? Because the past is that which precedes the present. If it is said that the present object is destroyed, but the substance is not, then if the substance and the object are the same, then the substance will also be destroyed like the object, or like the substance, the object will also not be destroyed. If they are different, then in present things, it should be possible to distinguish two different essences of substance and object, but since they are not distinguished, this is unreasonable. If it is said that the action is destroyed, but the substance is not, or the present own-nature disap
