When focusing without interruption, those consciousnesses of the object arise because of the focus; when there is an interruption between the object and the faculty, the arising of those consciousnesses is not focused. Therefore, for those faculties, it is not possible to establish direct perception. Furthermore, the five sense consciousnesses together with their corresponding concomitants only grasp the present object, because the past and future do not exist as real entities, and they arise from the power of the object being real. Even the present object is grasped in dependence on the distinct determination of each object, because the eye consciousness together with its corresponding concomitants only grasps form and does not grasp other objects. The mind consciousness together with its retinue grasps all characteristics, both self and general, and all times, past, future, and present, and all objects such as form and sound. If it is asked, "Are the characteristics of grasper and grasped not unestablished?" The answer is: In reality, because all phenomena have no action, there is no grasper. But in conventional terms, from the aggregation of causes and conditions such as object and faculty, consciousnesses arise that appear as form, sound, etc., therefore, it is merely in relation to this that it is spoken of as grasping. Whatever is said to be the grasper, all of that is also the grasped, because the faculties such as the eye are also objects of the mind consciousness. What is grasped but not a grasper refers to the meaning of the object of the grasper's activity, such as form, sound, etc., as well as non-associated formations and all unconditioned phenomena. When the grasped objects of the graspers are known to be merely phenomena, then the manifest clinging to the object of self-grasping is abandoned. Looking outward refers to, in the Buddha's teachings, what arises from hearing the scriptural teachings from a virtuous friend, and what arises from thinking by examining and analyzing the meaning of what is heard with reason, and the mind and mental factors included in the attainment of the Dharma realized through practicing in accordance with the teachings of hearing and thinking, although they act in desire, they are not looking outward, because they aim for nirvana by the very fact that they have the same cause for realizing the realm of Dharma. Other than that, desire and extreme attachment.

External observation of the dharmas refers to the increase of craving for the five desirable qualities and because they are in accordance with them. The four elements are the consciousness elements of nose and tongue, and the elements of smell and taste. The two ayatanas are the two ayatanas of smell and taste. The other part of these refers to those things that are fully combined with desire, except for those that are gathered by listening to the Buddha's teachings. Abandon attachment to the self by knowing that external observation, which is inseparable from attachment to desire, is merely a dharma. Internal observation is the opposite of external observation. Those things that are gathered by listening, thinking, and meditating on the Buddha's teachings, and by samadhi, are internal observation, because they are aimed at nirvana and meditative absorption. The other part of that refers to the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas that have just been mentioned. Abandon attachment to the self by knowing that internal observation, which is free from attachment to desire, is merely a dharma. Afflictive dharmas are non-virtuous and obscured-and-indeterminate dharmas, because they possess afflictions or near-afflictions, either as the cause of motivation, or as a corresponding companion, or as their own nature, they are called afflictive. Among these, obscured-and-indeterminate refers to the mind that pervades all times except for three special cases, the afflictive mind and the four afflictions such as the view of self that corresponds to it, and the co-emergent view of self and extreme view that correspond to consciousness, and the afflictions and near-afflictions that arise in the form and formless realms, along with their corresponding companions. These are obscured because they are disturbed by afflictions and near-afflictions, and they are also indeterminate because they are not predicted to produce a result of maturation. Among these, the afflictive mind is indeterminate because it enters the same continuum together with virtuous dharmas. The view of self and extreme view of the wheel of consciousness also arise universally in the continuum of those who have separated from attachment to desire, and because of internal observation, they cannot completely provoke misdeeds.
