It is also unwholesome for this reason. The afflictions of the higher realms are not unwholesome because they cannot fully incite misdeeds through meditative absorption. The ten realms are the seven consciousness realms, and the realms of form, sound, and phenomena. The four sources are the mind source, the phenomena source, the form source, and the sound source. One part of them is encompassed by the unwholesome and the obscured and unspecified. By knowing only the afflictive dharmas, one abandons the attachment to self. That which is non-afflictive is virtuous and unobscured and unspecified, not afflictive, because afflictions and near afflictions do not possess the cause of incitement, the corresponding companion, and their own nature. Otherwise, it would contradict being virtuous or unobscured and unspecified. The eight realms and sources are the five faculties, and smell, taste, and touch. One part of the remainder is that which is abandoned, the unwholesome and the obscured and unspecified. Because afflictions such as desire arise from the faculties such as the eye, they become afflictive. Otherwise, would the unwholesome of body and speech, etc., which have afflictions as their cause, also become non-afflictive? It is not the same, for example, the ability of poison to generate suffering is directed at its own nature, food mixed with poison, and flowers and fruits, etc., produced by poison, but the ability to generate suffering in others is not directed at the ground where poison grows. Similarly, the power of afflictions, such as harm to oneself and others, also arises from its own nature, the corresponding companion, and the resulting fruit of incitement, but not from the faculties, etc., from which it arises. Because the power of the cause can be transferred to the effect, but the power of the effect cannot be transferred to the cause. Therefore, just as that which has the power of poison, such as generating death and suffering, is called poisonous, that which the power of afflictions is directed at is called afflictive. Therefore, the obscured and unspecified afflictions and

If it is thought that because afflictions have ceased, there is no power of afflictions such as the ability to generate misdeeds, so it is not a state with afflictions. It is not so, because although they do not have the ability to incite misdeeds, they have the ability to make the mind close to afflictions. Otherwise, it would become abandoning the nature of afflictions. For example, poison killed by mantras and medicine, although it does not have the ability to kill, it does not abandon its original nature. If one knows that non-affliction is only dharma, one can abandon attachment to self. Dividing the past etc. into sixteen types, there are six

Now, one should abandon the attachment to making some of the selves of past lives appear to enter the present state. The future has the cause to produce, but because it has not obtained its own nature, it has not arisen. The so-called having a cause is to exclude the unconditioned; the so-called not arising is to exclude the past and the present. Not obtaining its own characteristic is because its own nature has not arisen. The function of cause and effect is that the activity of its seed has not been done, and it has not yet arisen. Like the present attachment and faith, the objects that cause mental afflictions and purification do not closely exist, and the sign of equanimity's purification is that it is placed in equanimity without taking the sign of pleasant or unpleasant, therefore afflictions arising from it do not arise. Manifest joy and the absence thereof are, in order, signs of affliction and purification: because some phenomena in accordance with future afflictions are apprehended, one transforms into anger that accords with attachment; and some phenomena in accordance with purification are apprehended, faith or the like will arise. Having and not having cause and self-nature are, in order, having the ability to produce fruit, and not being established from one's own cause. When one knows that the future does not exist as a substance, one should abandon the attachment to making the self of the future state enter the present state. The present arising has the characteristic of its own nature arising from a cause and not ceasing, the cause has already produced the fruit, therefore it has a function, the self-nature of the fruit has not perished, therefore it has not been examined, and the mental afflictions and purifying objects of the present attachment and faith closely exist, and the cause of establishing the past and future is that the present state that has already been obtained is the past, and what has not been obtained but can be obtained is the future. Existing as an agent is that the eye and form, etc., of the present state have the ability to perform their respective functions. All
