If it is said, is it reasonable in terms of the way of holding knowledge? Because the word "holding" can refer to both action and activity, so if "holding aspect" is connected with action, saying "that which is held" is like that. However, here, "the nature of holding" is connected with the activity called "holding aspect," so there is no fault. Then, what is the nature of the object, and what is the difference? Others think that the nature is the dharma or the support, and the difference is the dharmata or the supported. But that is not reasonable, because difference and that which has difference, or dharma and that which has dharma, cannot be the object of the sense consciousness and its retinue, because they are only established by the desire of a person, so they cannot be established in reality. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, "Difference and that which has difference, because of the desire to express, are dependent on others." It is also said in the Compendium of Valid Cognition, "The possessor of dharma of many natures, is not possible to be realized by sense consciousness." Therefore, it should be understood that the own characteristics of the aggregates are the nature of the object, and the own characteristics of the substance are the difference. Then, all the differences of form are the same own characteristic of the aggregate called form aggregate, and similarly, all sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects are only the respective own characteristics of their respective aggregates. The inner characteristics of form, such as blue and yellow, etc., and also likeable and dislikeable, etc.; the differences of sound, such as the sound of water, the sound of music, and the sound of wind, etc., and also pleasant and unpleasant, etc., these are called the own characteristics of the substance. The nature and difference of the object with characteristics just mentioned are also known by the mind and mental factors, and the meaning is also to completely determine the nature and difference. And the meaning of completely determining is to generate a definite understanding of their differences, not just to know the nature of the object of nature and difference. If that is the case, because there is no difference between the nature of the object and the substance of difference of one object, both will know both, then the distinction that the mind only knows the nature and the mental factors only know the difference will not be reasonable. It cannot be said that there is no fault because of knowing through self-power and other-power, because Madhyamaka

In the "Thai Commentary," it says, "Merely seeing objects is consciousness." In its explanation, it says, "'Merely' means negating distinctions, that is, not grasping particulars, but only focusing on the essence of the object." This is because consciousness prevents the understanding of the differences of objects. Furthermore, just as a drink mixed with medicine can relieve illness through the power of being associated with the medicine, while the medicine relieves illness through its own power, but there is no difference in their ability to relieve illness, so it cannot be said that the drink mixed with medicine has no ability to relieve illness, while the medicine does. Similarly, whether it is self-power or other-power, both can understand both the essence and the differences of objects. Therefore, the distinction that "seeing objects is consciousness, and its differences arise from the mind" is unreasonable. Whether or not a definite understanding is drawn from an object also determines whether or not that object is seen, which is recognized in both the world and the scriptures. In the world, even when the mind is focused on other things, if one has personally experienced forms, sounds, etc., one will say, "I have not seen, I have not heard." In the scriptures, it is also said, "If this is not seen, then that is not seen." This refers to the realm that is not the object of the wisdom of dependent children, but the realm of the subsequent attainment of the noble ones. Establishing universals as the object of the wisdom of children is also solely based on whether or not a definite understanding can be drawn from that object. Even so, is it that consciousness can draw a definite understanding of the self-characteristic of the sense-sphere as mentioned earlier, but not of the self-nature of the object? What is the basis for this? It is based on scriptural and logical proofs. First, the scriptural proof is that Master Vasubandhu said, "Whatever is the self-nature of the sense-sphere is the object of its own self-nature, but not the self-nature of the object." Therefore, the sense consciousnesses are said to be the objects of the self-characteristic of the sense-sphere, but not the objects of the self-nature of the object. There is also logical proof: eye consciousness is not the object of each individual self-nature of objects such as blue and yellow, because when many different colored objects such as blue and yellow are close together at the same time, it grasps them collectively.
