The reason for being categorized as the aggregate of conditioned phenomena is that the corresponding formations, and the manifestation of phenomena and non-phenomena, whether afflicted or purified, all share the same basis as the root of mistaking it for self. This is because, through faith and so on, the mind is purified, or through desire and so on, the mind is afflicted. In these situations, people make false distinctions, thinking that the self is afflicted, or that the self is purified. Furthermore, non-corresponding formations are also included in these states. The fifth question is about the definition of the aggregate of consciousness: What is "consciousness"? The answer is: It has the characteristic of being able to cognize objects. The detailed explanation of this is: The consciousness that relies on the eye faculty is able to cognize forms. Similarly, the consciousness that relies on the mind faculty is also able to cognize phenomena. The word "also" here indicates mutual inclusion, meaning that not only the cognition of forms is consciousness, but also the cognition of sounds and other phenomena. If mental factors can also cognize objects such as forms and sounds, then why are they not considered consciousness? Because in answering this question, the difference between mind and mental factors has not been distinguished, so it is difficult to answer. Therefore, it is necessary to temporarily explain the difference between mind and mental factors, please listen carefully, wise ones. As the *Madhyāntavibhāga* says: "There, seeing the object is only consciousness, the difference of that is mental factor." This means that merely seeing the essence of the object is mind, and seeing the difference of the object is mental factor. Regarding this, some ancient scholars debated, saying: If neither understands, then the aspect of the object is the same, and if both understand, then the difference between mind and mental factor is difficult to distinguish. They argued that if both understand, the mind can understand the essence of the object by its own power, and understand the difference by other power, while the mental factor is the opposite, so there is no fault. Here, the mind only understands the essence of the object, but does not understand the difference, and the mental factor only understands the difference, but does not understand the essence, so they will not be without difference. Even so, the objects will not be dissimilar, because on the same object, various different forms of knowledge are completely determined. For example, a person...

Just as the knowledge of two, enemies and friends, completely distinguishes between what is liked and disliked with respect to the same object. Therefore, to summarize, if someone asks: Why is it said to be "with aspects"? The answer is: Because the four objects of focus appear in many aspects. Thus it is said. Therefore, the nature and the different aspects of mind and mental factors are not the same, because if the awareness of these cognitions were not different, it would lead to faults, because the difference in the different cognitions is distinguished only by the difference in the apprehended aspect. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Because the objects are different, the cognitions of the mind are different." Thus it is said. In this way, in the Explanation of the Abhidharma, it says: "Place, object, aspect, time, and substance are the same, and because they follow the mind with five aspects, they are called those with sameness because they possess sameness." Is that not what is said? This is only considering the general sameness of apprehension. In reality, they consider the ways of apprehending the nature and differences to be different. Because that teacher said in the explanation of the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes: "These places, objects, times, and substances are the same, but if there is no difference from consciousness, it would lead to faults, therefore it is not because the aspects are the same." For the proponents of Mind-Only, if truthfully speaking, there is no object of focus other than the apprehended aspect, and if the apprehended aspects of mind and mental factors are also different, then how can they become the same object of focus? If even a particle-like object of focus of true knowledge is not admitted, then what need is there to mention admitting the same object of focus for mind and mental factors? Even so, in conventional truth, whatever appears as a single entity that is cut off from knowledge is established as the object of focus in accordance with worldly terminology. And here, the aspect is not considered to be the aspect of the object as in the Sutra School, because there is no aspect of the object other than what appears to the knowledge, and there is no object or object of focus other than that. Therefore, the way of apprehending of knowledge is considered to be the aspect, and the different ways of apprehending of knowledge are called different apprehended aspects. Is not the apprehended aspect what appears as the object to be apprehended?
