For the mind is what makes all afflictions arise, while virtuous dharmas such as faith, and other things such as contact that arise and accord with them, purify the mind. These three should be understood as non-associated compositional factors depending on whichever state, afflicted or purified, they are in, because these three states of affliction and purification are only that much. The unconditioned should be understood depending on whatever the nature of purification is, namely, that wherein purification is suchness, that by which purification is achieved is immovability, and cessation of perception and sensation; and that which is purification is discriminative cessation. Therefore, all five are only what should be known. Therein, form is the aggregate of form, and so forth. These five summarize and show all the aggregates, elements, and sources previously explained, but they are not distinguished for the sake of easy understanding. Secondly, explaining from the perspective of the knower: Furthermore, those knowable dharmas such as form are also knowable because they are the objects of knowledge through faith and understanding, and so forth should be added. Therein, knowledge through faith and understanding is the wisdom arising from hearing, because it arises only from trusting and believing what others have shown. Knowledge through reasoning is the wisdom arising from thinking, because it arises from examining and investigating through reasoning. Knowledge without distraction is the wisdom arising from worldly meditation, because it arises from focusing the mind single-pointedly on the object without scattering outwards. Knowing the self of others is knowing the minds of others, because the mind of the self of others is the object. Lower knowledge is knowledge of the Dharma, because it arises at the beginning of the direct realization of the truths. Individual self-knowledge is knowledge of the ultimate meaning, because it is the meaning that cannot be expressed in words to others, but is to be known individually by each yogi through investigation. Higher knowledge is subsequent knowledge, knowledge of the Dharma.

Therefore, knowing refutation is knowing suffering, that is, to make the minds of beings in the three realms disgusted with the sufferings of birth and so on, or to refute those who desire liberation. Knowing insufficiency is knowing the origin, because this knowledge arises from striving to eliminate the origin. Knowing non-arising is knowing cessation, because it takes cessation, the nature of the non-arising of suffering, as its object. Knowing is knowing the path, because it takes the path, the essence of wisdom, as its object. Knowing the ultimate is knowing exhaustion and non-arising, because they arise when the activity of the path is completed. Knowing the great meaning is knowing the Great Vehicle, because it takes the nature of the perfection of self and other's benefit as its object. These thirteen knowledges are also established from the distinctions of the three causes of hearing, thinking, and meditating, such as the three knowledges of faith and understanding. From the distinction between conventional truth and ultimate truth, two types are established: knowing one's own and knowing the nature of others. From the distinction of the time of arising, knowing the lower and knowing the higher are established. From the distinction of the aspects of the object, four knowledges such as refutation are established. From the distinction of focusing on one's own benefit and the benefit of others, two knowledges, the ultimate and knowing the great meaning, are established. Furthermore, there are five things to be known: designation, ultimate truth, the limit of activity, the minds of others, and all aspects. Knowing them in order is knowing the conventional, knowing the ultimate, knowing exhaustion and non-arising, knowing the minds of others, and knowing the ten powers. Among these, knowing the conventional is twofold: knowing the scriptures and knowing worldly conventions. The first is knowing good and non-good, with and without fault, dependent origination, and so on, and then some of these are to be abandoned, and some are to be relied upon separately. The second is knowing the ways of the world, and thus according to the actions of the world, just like causes and conditions.
