Through focused meditation, all defilements are completely purified, therefore, everything exists ultimately. In the commentary, it is said that all dharmas are Suchness, because they are not other than that. By knowing that the object to be purified is merely dharma, one abandons the attachment to oneself as the cause of purification. In this way, what are called conventional and ultimate, do not exist as being established separately in one's own continuum, however, when children impute aspects of purity, pleasure, etc., which are in accordance with the increase of defilements, onto these dharmas belonging to the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, then all of that is established as conventional, which obscures the reality. When it is determined that those aggregates, etc., are impermanent, etc., or the emptiness of the two, grasper and grasped, then at that time, all of those are in accordance with complete purification and become the domain of noble wisdom, therefore they are established as ultimate. Therefore, the aggregates, etc., distinguished by the inverted aspects of permanence, pleasure, self, etc., are in accordance with the increase of defilements, and because they do not enter into reality, they are conventional. The aggregates, etc., distinguished by the non-inverted aspects of impermanence, etc., are in accordance with the complete purification of defilements, and because they enter into reality, they are ultimate. This seems to enter into the meaning of the text. Here, is whatever exists substantially, does that exist ultimately? Is whatever exists ultimately, is that also substantially existent? If asked thus, there are things that exist substantially but are not ultimately existent, namely, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, such as form and sound, which are substantially existent, and those distinguished by inverted aspects such as purity and pleasure. There are also things that are ultimately existent but not substantially existent, namely, the aspects of truth such as impermanence, etc., and the three aspects of Suchness, etc. There are also things that are both, namely, the substantially existent forms, etc., distinguished by non-inverted aspects such as impermanence, etc. There are also things that are neither

These are the cessations that are not separately examined from space, and so on. Furthermore, is everything that exists by imputation also conventionally existent? Answer: There are things that exist by imputation but are not conventionally existent, namely, the third case mentioned earlier. Furthermore, is everything that exists as a substance also conventionally existent? Answer: There are four possibilities. The third case from the first set becomes the third case here. The second case from the first set becomes the fourth case here. Furthermore, is everything that exists by imputation ultimately existent? Answer: There are four possibilities. The fourth case from the first set is the first case here. The third case from the first set is the second case here. The second case from the first set is the third case here. The first case from the first set is the fourth case here. Now, the nature of the three, such as knowable objects, will be explained. Among them, first, with regard to knowable objects, it is said, "How should they be known?" etc. Among them, there are two explanations: the nature of the five bases and the explanation by the distinction of the knower. The first is: The objects to be known by those who desire liberation are of five types, namely, form and so on. Why are all these objects to be known? With regard to the basis of affliction and purification, form is to be known, because when the body with its senses is the object, some are afflicted by attachment and so on, and others focus on what should be focused on with faith and so on. With regard to the object of affliction and purification, the nature of mind is to be known, because the mind is naturally pure, and when it is associated with attachment and so on, it is called affliction, and when it is associated with faith and so on, it is called purification. There is no other phenomenon besides the mind that can become afflicted or purified. With regard to the agent of affliction and purification, mental factors are to be known, namely, afflictions such as desire, near afflictions such as anger, and contact, feeling, perception, thought, and so on, which are in accordance with their arising.
